Putting fingers on the glass (EFIS, TCAS, Stormscope, Radar, FMS). Come on, it leaves prints.
Leaving the stormscope in the menu mode. It doesn't do any good unless you press the 360/120 button. Slow radio calls in busy airspace. High time copilots who try to act like the PIC. Advancing my powerlevers before I ask them to set power. Refusing to hand fly the aircraft after 200ft on climb out and outside the FAF. What are they going to do when the AP fails and they have no feel for how the airplane handles? |
FO's that do the preflight while talking on their cel..(who da foc are you talking to? your cfi buddy at Riddle? telling him how cool is to"preflight" an RJ..Duuuude iss sooo coool all the chicks are looking at me from upstairs..) Stop it. you look like a lil biaatch gossiping on the phone.
|
All you captains, next time before you yell at your F.O. for your personal pet peeve, think back to being an F.O. If we haven't flown with you before, we have no idea what you want from us, other than SOP's. Look at these two quotes...

As a CA, I always ask myself to 2 questions:
1. Is is unsafe? 2. Is it illegal? (FAA or company) If I answer "no" to BOTH, I can't ***** at the FO. |

My philosophy is-
I'm going to watch my FO's like a hawk. If they do something that I don't like- they'll hear about it. I expect them to do the same to me, watch me closely. I make mistakes, even if it's not going to effect safety of flight, it could lead to it. Oh and Colgan FO's- get a rolling flight case, the carry-aboard ones look rediculous. |

personally i think the rolling flight cases look rediculous, and are redundant. Here is my rollaboard suit case, with my rollaboard flight case, my rollaboard laptop case, and my rollaboard lunch sack.....

I heard a story that a Fed was watching some fo or ca do the walkaround with his cell stuck against their head, and got some fine for incomplete preflight or something. I don't know if its true, but food for thought. Things that bug me: Running checklists w/o asking (Imma throw that in the brief now) Poor airmanship (i.e. not being able to do a simple vfr pattern) Putting the data card over the rudder trim knob. |

I've been the, "he'll hear about it" route and, believe me, it won't work for you. |

Plain and simple:
My biggest annoyance is when the other guy/gal tries to do my job without asking. Chances are I was going to do it, but I didn't feel like it was time yet. |
Well, believe it or not, not too much bothers me.
I dont like when CA's dont tell me Im doing something wrong, only to find out by a Good CA that Have been doing something wrong for months...... F/A' that are rude to the PAX, cant speak proper English, and dont ask us if we are at least alive on 3 hr flights........... CA's that dont tune the frequency when my hands are full......., and they are just sitting there............ Douchebag FO's that dont thank you for getting the walk around ( I know I know we are all supposed to do our own) |
coulnt agree more!!!!
not leting go the release on a quick turn
couldnt agree more!!!! I hate that!!! |
I am very laid back and relax. However, being new and on rsv is very difficult. Every capt has a different way of doing things. I had this whole standard issue driven into my head by the training center but, it seems to be far from standard. Its different everyday. I have found that if I am flying with a capt that kinda has the attitude of the person a few posts back "I don't care what you do as long as I don't have to fill out an ASAP". That works well, I can be efficient, relaxed, and do a good job. If I am not sure about something I'll just ask. I can have a good time too. If I fly with someone who is intense and controlling, I have hard time finding the confidence to a good job. I cannot relax. I feel like no matter what button I touch the capt will say something that its wrong. As I get more comfortable in the plane it will probably help. The problem is that I cannot rely on a standard way to do anything. I try to do the best I can. I just kinda take as a learning experience of how to be the best possible captain that I could be someday. As a captain I'll think I how I felt as a newbie Fo and take that into account when managing the cockpit.

-bad attitudes
-people who complain the whole time |
copilots who just sit there and do nothing, especially when you do emergency procedures training.

I really despise the standard question. where do you live? How long have you been with the company? Are you married/girlfriend? How about we do are job and go home.
|
I also hate nose pickers, breathing like tony saprano in my ear, eating in my ear, complaining about the job, Taxing with the headsets, turning on the flood light at night so they can stay awake.
|
My pet peeve is when you do something like run a checklist at the time it's supposed to be run and the CA gets all irritated because he didn't 'ask' for it. :D
P.S. - Prior to reading this thread, I was discussing exactly this scenario with my CA. Our new joke is now "I haven't called for that yet!!!!!!" anytime someone makes a common sense move in the cockpit... |

It wasn't a question on following standards, I just used that as an example of something that may bother people. I worked at a restaurant a couple years ago and I was a host, and as soon as I switched to being a server I realized there were all kinds of things hosts did that bothered me as well as other servers that I was even doing before that I had no idea was even annoying. I have now been with an airline for about a half a year and just was curious what may bother people. Not saying people should get upset about it at all, I do just that, do my job and go home. If someone did something that slightly annoyed me I would shake it off and move on, which is what most people responding have said they would do. The question had nothing to do with standards, or having a bad attitude and getting angry in the cockpit, just straight up curious if there are certain things that I may not have realized bother some people, for example hogging the paper work. I've probably done that at least once and had no idea, great example! now I know not to do it. I live in Atlanta, not married, and have a boyfriend, not sure what that has to do with anything but whatever. |
by the way ... my biggest annoyance in the cockpit is negative attitudes.

Our new joke is now "I haven't called for that yet!!!!!!" anytime someone makes a common sense move in the cockpit... Sharky, I know how you feel on this one.... you've got twice as much work to do and if the old crusty would just let you get to it, your life would probably be easier, right! Here's something to consider; 1. Why does it bother you? Could it be, just maybe, that you are starting to feel the captain inside of you just bubbling out? You want to show that you know what do and when to do it? I'm not saying this in a negative way. We've all been there. you will find, when you make captain, that you will find your rhythm, and when the FO is trying to interject his rhythm it might throw you off. Maybe, just maybe, you're a type A+ personality, and you're spreading your wings too much and the captain who did this too you was just doing a little nipping in the butt. 2. maybe you are flying with really young captains that are threaten by how good you are. Cut him some slack, it's not easy finding your balance between being cool, and being in charge. What is for sure, is that very soon you'll get to find out what it's like from the other chair! For what it's worth, I brief the FO, " go ahead an just do T/O to the line and After landing, you're a pro- you don't need me" But there are times that the FO will start briefing T/O information at a busy intersection or at a place where you're listening for ATC because your experience tells you that you need to be listening for that call (taxi way D in ATL, or the 50 yard line in LAX) and might tell him to hold off. It might come across like the way your captain lopped you off at the knees, when really there was a reason. Not trying to lecture, this string is about insight to the other seat. I hope this might help. Stick |
FO's that fail to check on performance because their 200hr in type tough them isnt necessary.
|
When the other pilot says "I just want to go home", literally every 10 minutes.
And doesn't miss one 10 minute span without saying this. |

Wow, what a b*tchfest.
Give me a break - SOP are SOP for a reason. If you fly the airplane according to SOP, no matter if you're flying with a new F/O or an old F/O, things should always be done the same. Period. 'Nuff said. Who started this lame thread to begin with? |

FO's that do the checklist by memory instead of picking up and readingTHE actual CHECKLIST.
