What's the average age for regional new hires?

Just curious at what age most pilots get hired. I know there are cases of 19 and 20 year olds, but what would yall say the average is?

MoonShot 08-08-2007 07:34 PM

Just a guess...25-27.

That sounds about right.

I would say yes, but more and more I am telling CA's I am a first year F/O but started at Colgan at 25, they are like "what the hell where you doing" so I dunno I guess a lot start much earlier

Slice 08-08-2007 07:45 PM

I was 24 in a much tougher market. Soon it will be 18-20 if the current trend continues.

I thought most airlines required you to be 21 before being hired? I know there are a few that hire at a lower age than that but I thought they were turboprop places like Colgan.

MoonShot 08-08-2007 07:54 PM

I agree that the requirements are allowing much younger folks in the airline cockpit. The more important question is, what is the average age of a MAJOR airline newhire and when is age 65 gonna pass?

ToiletDuck 08-08-2007 08:07 PM

Believe it or not in my class it was around 30. I'm 25 and was third from the bottom of 22 people.

wmugrad05 08-08-2007 08:09 PM

Yea that must be nice to be hired by a regional at 21 talk about being ahead of the game. I hope I can build enough hours within the year I'm gonna be 25 next month and constantly struggling to get my credit straight and save money it just sucks big time

"They" use to require 1000+ TT and significant ME time too. It obviously fluctuates based on how desperate they are to fill classes. Age would be no different.

TRS531 08-08-2007 08:36 PM

I plan on applying soon and I'll be 26 in 2 months....a lot of my buddies were between 24-28 when they started

SharkAir 08-08-2007 11:08 PM

At least from what I've seen, I would dare say the average is up in the 30s, simply because of the fact that the classes I've seen have one or two guys pushing 50 or 60.

Now the median, on the other hand, might be down in the late twenties.

And I'm 23, and I got an A- in statistics.

HercDriver130 08-09-2007 01:58 AM

I will be 44 this time around. the bright side is I probably get the best senority number in the class....LOL

Jesus, you and me both brotha..............not easy

crjav8er 08-09-2007 05:47 AM

Most junior in class of 14 at 24 yrs old.

The dude 08-09-2007 06:02 AM

I'd say at least 27 or 28. In a year of being a regional CA I can count on one hand how many FO's I've had younger than me and I'm only 26.

BlueMoon 08-10-2007 06:03 AM

2 1/2 years ago I was the youngest in the class at 23 (just turned 23 the month prior). A good friend was 21 when she got hired 3 years ago.

ERJ135 08-10-2007 06:12 AM

I was 21 first time around then 22 and believe it or not I was not the youngest at Eagle. I had 2 below me. BTW I did not PFT or had 500hrs either.

Superpilot92 08-10-2007 06:17 AM

I was 3rd youngest in my newhire class, I had just turned 24. I upgraded at 26. The Youngest in my class was 19.

BoilerUP 08-10-2007 06:23 AM

I was hired at AWAC at 22 years old.

Paok 08-10-2007 06:33 AM

My class was around 25, I am 22, there were 2 people below me that were 21 about to turn 22

Killer51883 08-10-2007 06:52 AM

in my eagle class i was 4 from the bottom at 22 and now at 23 in chq im still 4 from the bottom

Paok 08-10-2007 07:02 AM

Why were you in an eagle class less than a yaer ago and now at CHQ?

Exactly what I was thinking. For all of you who are hopping from regional to regional in 2 years or less, you're clogging up the hiring/training process for everyone else. Knock it off or we'll make you go back to instructing in 172's. :D

Killer51883 08-10-2007 08:57 AM

i left cause i was sick of a two stage 12 hour plus commute to a joke operation in puerto rico. now i have an easy commute to lga from pit soon have a long drive to cmh but its DRIVEABLE and then when i can hold a ca in PIT ill have a normal commute like every one else with a normal job.

down2mins 08-10-2007 06:19 PM

We had 13 in our class....from 22 to 44(?)

SharkyBN584 08-10-2007 07:19 PM

At RAH I was 3rd from the bottom after just turning 24. Oldest was mid-40's. Most guys were around 30ish. I have flown with one captain that was younger than me though and he'd been a captain for about 1.5 years....

GliderCFI 08-10-2007 08:00 PM

I started at pinnacle 2 months after turning 21, but a friend of mine left college for Expressjet...he's 19...says he'll finish the degree online...but his dad's also a CAL CA so...yeah.

Captainchris87 08-10-2007 08:21 PM

X jet hired someone at 18 hes 20 now. I am an intern witht hem at 19 they all though it was pritty young. belive it or not most people in my class had no mins they were all over 900TT

GliderCFI 08-11-2007 07:19 AM

Well yeah expressjet is probably one of the top 3 desired regionals to work for, for most people at least. I talked to a guy from there in the terminal the other day who said they're having staffing issues, but I'm sure it's everywhere else. A lot of guys there are getting bigger and better jobs according to him...

airventure 08-11-2007 07:23 AM

The past three months I've been doing 8710 forms for American Eagle. I'd estimate the average new hire age at 27. The youngest I've seen was 20 year old girl.

I thought Eagle did not hire anyone under 21?

higney85 08-11-2007 11:21 AM

I sent in a resume @20 and was told I had to be 21.. Interviewed a couple weeks after 21 and am looking for 23 for the upgrade. Starting to fly in high school was really the only way to make it happen. Doing college in 3 years and flying enough to have more than 1000/200 won't happen unless you get a head start, but there are plenty that are getting on at 22/23 with the degree but only 500 hours or less (unless they spent a summer towing banners or some other way of flying a ton while taking a full school load). The trend is definately to the lower end, and will remain that way until the supply/demand curve changes and pay/mins come back up. I was the youngest in my class by a few years, but I do know of a few others who were hired @ 21 with a degree and have just talked with a few others sub 25. This is a PNCL though so keep in mind a good bit of the "recruiting" over the last year has been on college campuses.

Yep. same here, degree in 3 years, flying with high school, interview two weeks after my 21st birthday. KH, sounds like I'm following in your footsteps more than I thought.
