This is why Colgan doesn't need a Union.

Low oil pressure light today in our plane and shut down the number 1, followed by emergency landing. Maintenance log shows the plane written up 3 times this week for oil pressure- just add some oil- ops check complete.

So we land safely, and instead of getting the rest of the day off, we take a cab to another airport, to catch the Shuttle to LGA, then deadhead 2 more short legs to ferry another plane back here. We waited 3 hours in the crew room because they wouldnt buy us a day room to catch a nap in.
Of course, this is after we refused to fly the broken plane on a ferry flight after more oil was added.

Thanks for voting NO.

The trick to solving this one is to make the writeup read something like this: "Oil pressure on number 1 engine low in flight at FL190."
Can't ops check that on the ground. :D

When writing it up, reference the other write ups in the current write up.

I hope this is not the norm at Colgan...

Mr Spooner 08-24-2007 12:51 PM

That sounds about right. Had a three hour mx delay yesterday, when they finally fixed it storms had moved in. Problem was we had prop heat MEL'd so we could not climb above it...had to wait longer for storm to pass.

Today was a 1 hr delay for mx on a plane that just came out of Manassas mx.

Where is SAAB and his typical Colgan bashing? Why not leave the Colgan complaining to those of us who actually work there.

George Dubya 08-24-2007 01:20 PM

I had that plane last week with the low oil pressure light. IN our case the gauges were fine but they did add oil to I believe the prop. Normal operating procedure here at Colgan. I love the circling apps at mins in heavy rain two of them today quite exciting

Mr Spooner 08-24-2007 01:33 PM

I do not mind the flying. You can throw the Saab around and she keeps asking for more. I just like it when the work.

I think the fire trucks were enough to raise some attention. ;)

batman 08-24-2007 02:38 PM

The FAA was on board the plane before MX showed up.. those dudes dont mess around.

Because I was there longer than you, and I have experienced more BS than you have, yet you still seem to stand up for your airline yet day after day this type of Bull**** goes on, why dont you go ask Lou Casella about write ups and how Colgan & Co went to bat for him.................

............and yet here on this forum you find plenty of starry-eyed 3 month F/O's sticking up for the airline..................

Why do you assume you were there longer than me? Also, I do not stand up for Colgan, I voted for the union and thought it would be a good thing. Mgmt has many issues and I am right now dealing with crew scheduling over pay credits. My point is that Colgan pilots have the right to complain about Colgan, not people who worked for them back in the day.

You are like the 40 year old guy who goes back to his high school in his old football uniform and talks to the current players about what it was like when he went there.

I have nothing against you Saab, were just two guys trying to make this thing work. I am just saying you need to move on with Colgan.

Palmtree Pilot 08-24-2007 05:45 PM

THIS IS WHY "SOME OF YOU" REGIONAL PILOT SHOULD GROW SOME B@LLS! JUST SAY NO!

When your fired call a good lawyer and subpeona your POI. Reference the FAR/AIM during the trial and get lots of time off, back pay and your job back!

IM SAFE... or is it: I AM SAFE

cbire880 08-24-2007 05:45 PM

Those starry eyed FO's are pretty serious. I saw two at FSI in STL about 3 weeks ago decked out in full uniform, including the hat. Dudes were checking their email in the lab. Those guys are hardcore! I someday wish I could be cool enough to wear my hat at Flight Safety.

Ok what you are not understanding is that what goes on at COLGAN, affects the rest of the industry. CHQ for example has set the bar at the 170 pay rates, they are not the best, but I am sure they will fight hard for higher ones. COLGAN is expanding at the expense of its employees. I understand I sound like a little girl at times, but the reason being is that I still see the same type of thing going on over there, and it shouldn't. I compare XJT to Colgan in many ways, just so people that may not have any other experience other than Colgan can see what an Airline job can be like. An example of this, is if there is a M/X issue the M/X guys are literally waiting at the gate for us, no questions asked! if its broken they fix it, if they cant fix it and no other airplanes are available then the flight is canceled............. I just want guys who are currently looking for regional jobs to beware that COLGAN is not the best place to be and the main reason is because the way management runs things. What drives me nuts is that when given the opportunity to change things.....................the "majority" of pilots didnt even bother "showing" up to vote..........And I only ask you how long you have been there, not because I am going to make a smart ass remark, but because I was ok with it for the 1st 4-6 months after that you get really tired of the bull****.........

Why should they have? I know the story (RIGHT FROM HIM). And yet he choose to stay for awhile longer. The only reason he left, was 'cause the Pinnacle "takeover". Saab, you are happy with XJT (by the way, thanks to the crew who took me to EWR yesterday), move on. You are starting to sound like Skyhigh.

belliott 08-24-2007 09:25 PM

Not to p1ss anyone off.... but could you relate this story about Lou Casella?

Where did he go?

Short Bus Drive 08-25-2007 07:41 AM

Lou's here. He was enjoying the sattelite base in ACY, until the union pulled the LOA. 21 days off, NO reserve, and 77 credit hours. (He still picked up some trips on his days off at 150%.)

And for "Ponch"(belliot):
Long story short, he took an airplane that the previous Capt. told him had a oil gauge problem (flickering). Had to come back to IAD. FAA got involved. Never was in the book. But the previous guy called ops to have MX meet the aircraft. FAA got wind of that too.
That's why when the previous crew comes in and says there is a problem with the aircraft, I say to put it in the book!!!

They look pretty serious in the uniform and hats. But the backpacks, they just ruin the look. However, they are convienient for carrying all that hair gel.

Mr Spooner 08-25-2007 08:10 AM

Like you guys were not excited to get your first uniform. The problem is after a while we all hate the hat and mainly use it to hold our cell phone, wallet, and badge.

ExperimentalAB 08-25-2007 08:13 PM

I Love my hat because the LADIES Love it. LoL - just have your girlfriend (or mistress) pose for you in it and you'll Love it too haha.

Thanks for sharing.... a good lesson to learn before I get myself into a similar situation.

haha I remember one night at the blue82 in ALBANY I met a girl and she came back to my apartment and she did things, and all the while she was wearing my COLGAN hat hahaahha, it was one of my proudest moments, if the Expressjet symbol wasnt so silly looking I would like ot wear my hat................

BeatsCFIing 08-26-2007 04:40 PM

Saab, I have to agree, when I came to Colgan, you were just getting on with Xjet. I thought you were just a ****ed of whiner. I thought, an airline job is an airline job. But now, after 7 months on the line and upgrade in the near future, I hate this place. The resumes are out and as soon as someone bites, I'm gone. Preferably RAH. I would join you at Xjet, but I'm from the NE and IAH is the only base I would want. My friend at Xjet is based in EWR and after 2 years of the hassle and delays, he has a debate with himself at night. Does he put the bottle of beer or the barrel of his Glock in his mouth? Hopefully something other than Colgan will help me enjoy my job. Great Job, Crappy Career.

BeatsCFIing 08-26-2007 04:44 PM

One other thing, here is a mx dream. I worked 5 legs the other day and we had mx on 4 of them. A flap failure, comm failure, door warning sys failure, and a capt audio panel. What a day. we had one more scheduled leg, but we timed out after sitting for three hours while the mighty system control worked something out. Then the mechanic shows up and taps it and says just plug into the jumpseat jacks and fly it out...then he says, come on man, that would be so much more convenient for us. How about a flight crews safety, esp with the track record of colgan and the cape and islands.

Well, Good luck, I know I sometimes sound like an A**hole to some, but those of you like yourself that spend some time there are now starting to understand what I mean..............Anyway Fly safe and good luck with your 121 time you will be able to get any regional job you want, Good luck...........

Thanks for voting NO.

From what I heard, there was only a handful of no votes. Which means the vast majoity just plain failed to show up and vote. Much worse in my opinion. If the majority had voted No, you would have to respect it . At least they would of had some sort of opinion.
At Colgan, you folks that failed to vote, got what you voted for, more of the same and maybe worse now that the company knows what kind of people they are dealing with.

Good luck.

To vote NO was simply to not call in, there was no way to vote NO for representation once you called in. You could vote ALPA or other union but couldn't vote no.

148 Votes ALPA
2 votes Teamsters
1 vote write in

151 votes, 155 needed to certify a union.

SenecaDriver 08-28-2007 07:23 AM

Sorry Mud,
I misunderstood my source. I was under the impression it was an up or down vote. Thanks for the correction.

Wow! 7 votes short. Thats gotta sting.

I still think that the folks that failed to vote (200 +), call in, or whatever, are going to get what they asked for........ nothing better and maybe worse.

visceral 08-28-2007 03:15 PM

I haven't received any communications from Colgan since the vote results were announced. Back to ops normal.

I was for the union for nothing else but protection. To think that ALPA would come in and raise pay, QOL, days off, food in crew rooms, foot rubs, hot FA...well that is unrealistic.

Colgan is Colgan. Those of us who work here know it and most accept it for what it is. If you do not like it you can leave, Saab left and he is happy so it was a good move for him.

If you want Colgan to be like Republic or SkyWest it will never happen ALPA or not. If you want those airlines work rules then work for them.

If you were to compare Regionals to the restaurant industry Colgan is like Denny's, just basic crap. If you work at Denny's you do not expect to get paid like you work at the prime steakhouse down the road, you are Denny's. However being Denny's is better than being McDonalds (Mesa) or a roachcoach (BlowJets)

I think their was alot more to that story than most people realize.
I don't think you should be calling out peoples' names either.
You shouldn't put other peoples business out there.
