Default ORD pilots I need some info

I'm thinking of moving to Chichago, my # would be much better there than in SLC. I love standup's, 1 and 2 day trips. I'm shocked when I look at open time and see standups in ORD. Is traffic and parking at the airport so bad that it makes anything other than a 3 or 4 day trip just a complete pain? If you lived 30 miles away from ORD, how long would you have to give yourself from driveway to check in? Aslo, what is going on in IL with property taxes? A 230,000 home had taxes around $5,000! Does IL have state income tax? Any other info about ORD or Chichago would be great, Thanks...

I lived in Chicagoland for a couple of years. Yes, they have a state income tax. Yes property taxes are outrageous. If you lived 30 miles from the airport, I would venture to say that you'd need to give yourself 30-60 mins to get to the airport, depending on time of day. However, there are some nice communities not far from ORD, if I remember correctly.

I grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and I never realized how much I liked it until I left. I can't wait to move back. However, property taxes have been going through the roof lately and I know that I won't be able to afford my own place with a first year regional salary unless I have 14 roommates! My old man flies for AA and has always been happy with his ORD domicile, especially after he grew up in CA......just some random stuff for ya. Feel free to PM me with any other questions ya may have regarding the area!

I live about 30 miles or so from ORD, and it consistently takes me 40 mins from my driveway to the employee lot (45 mins going to the terminal or pay parking). I always leave 1h30m before my check-in time, gives me plenty of time to spare. Not sure what airline you work for, but seeing as you mentioned SLC, I'm going to assume SkyWest, like myself. If that is the case, get a SIDA badge from the ORD badging office. Go to the ORD employee lounge (below gate E-3), get an application for a green badge from one of the office people down there), then go to the badging office. This one is tricky....go to Terminal One (United) baggage claim, walk to the far end, go down the escalator, go left, and you should see it. You can always ask someone if you get lost.

Anyway, SkyWest employees park in the United Airlines lot, there is a bus that runs frequently to Terminal One from there.

BTW....if you don't have a SIDA badge for ORD, you will need an escort to the crew lounge, as it is entered from the ramp below E-3

I am looking to commute into ORD as to not have to deal with the traffic or cost of living...Grew up in NYC and worked at JFK (battling traffic to work each and every day gets so old so quick) for a year.

For me, I can't think of anything I enjoy better about work than driving to some Podunk Airport with Podunk parking and Podunk security and jumping a short flight to work. All that hustle and bustle just adds to the stress of going to work imho...Sooooo, being hub-based here in ORD I'll take a 4-day over a 1 or 2 day (or standup!) any day of the week and twice on tuesday to avoid the driving to and from the Airport deal - but hey, different strokes for different folks!

Anyways, yes, of course IL has state income tax. If there is a tax for it, Illinois has it unfortunately.

I personally think property taxes here are out of control.

I have 2 1/4 acre waterfront lot on the Fox River and I pay $12,000 a year (and the house is a dump).

It's not quite [I]that[I] bad other places. My mom has a house worth about $290K in another county and her's are $4000 a year.

I HATE STANDUPS...... THE report is like 8pm (nice right) yet i live 80 miles from NYC do u know how long that takes during rush hour? I have to leave at like 3, and then I get like an hour of sleep and its always in canada, so even less sleep bc of customs, then get home at like 830am right in time for rush hour, i nearly die driving home bc I am so fatigued....maybe for commuters or people with families, but highspeeds suckkkkkkkkkkkkk for me

Thanks for the info! Standups in SLC are pretty good, 6 or 7 hours of sleep in the hotel. 5.7 hours of pay for 2 hours of flying. I guess for Skywest, most ORD pilots don't live in chichago. Thanks agian.
