How Bad Does 142 Hurt?
 

Im wrapping up my flight training prior to CFI and my training has been Part 142 based so far.

The question I pose is if anyone in particular tends to look down on people who have been learning to fly mostly by sim as opposed to the real thing.

Anyone else been in the same boat?

Only people like me that had to flight instruct for two years to get hired. But no in reality no one should as most of the FO's at the regionals now got their certs within a couple of months prior to getting hired.

As far as getting your certificates, nobody cares where they came from unless it was the military.

Some 141 guys like to say that 141 is better, but they are invariably students or CFI's who are just mindlessly parroting what the salesman told them when he took their money (I have extensive 141 and 61 experience). Nobody in the kerosene world gives a darn.

Sounds like you're going to CFI for a while...that will be viewed favorably since it is real-world PIC experience.

Pardon my ignorance, but I didn't know you could do initial certificate training under Part 142. I would think you would be looked down upon if you did most of your initial time building to 200 hours in sims. Flying the sim is very different from operating an aircraft in the real world. Sure the handling and visuals are close, but there is a lot more to the job. That's why we have IOE at 121 operations.

Now if you meant to say Part 141 flight schools, then I completely agree with Rickair.

I believe sim time doesn't count so you'll have lower tt.

Plus if you instruct there, it will be harder to build time. Which means more flight instructing, yeah :)

Although, I use to rack up big bucks by running multiple sims at one time. Now that's gold seal material, lol.

Riddle tried it from 2004-2006 and realized people want to fly, not play FS, so theyre back to 141.

I think that also brings the 'looked down upon' phrase into perspective...

Learning Part 142, you'll just have to hone your stick and rudder skills later in your career - as a CFI - or worse (mostly for your Pax and Captain), a Jet F/O LoL.

Anyway, the Sim can't teach you how to feel the plane...!

Of course, in this market you will probably still find a job if you have the ratings and a pulse. I just don't see a hiring coordinator picking an all sim trained pilot without real world experience over someone who has sweated it out in the real airplane. No disdain intended. Luckily, there are plenty of jobs to go around right now!

Its hurting real bad knowing I spent good money to use a sim for 142 when i could have used it to buy more multi time.........:mad:

Hell - most of us completed 121 training entirely in a Simulator...then jumped in the real thing and flew a Jet for the first time in our lives, and with 50+ victims errr passengers LoL.
