Mesa or Trans States
Just curious which you would choose if you had the choice. I would have to commute with either airline. I hear that TSA has a faster upgrade and more days off a month. I realize both suck but which would be better to get the time and move on?
Thanks  |
Neither flight instruct and go to SKW EXJ AWAC or any other good airline out there.
|
Choosing an airline to work for is not like picking up chicks at a bar; "go ugly early" does NOT apply here!
|
Agreed. With all the info out there on these places why contribute to the decline of the profession by accepting substandard conditions. Be patient. You'll be happy you waited a little longer. There's a reason FO's at Mesa are making lateral moves in droves.
|
If you absolutely had to do one or the other, do TSA. Faster upgrade.
|
And block or better.
Commuting sucks. Don't commute for either carrier. Instruct a little longer and go somewhere that works for you. |

In other news, I was in a crewroom at IAD that Mesa uses and there was a graph on the wall that dealt with attrition. For 2007 so far, they have lost over 700 pilots. |
N-e-i-t-h-e-r!!!!

Kinda like asking if you would rather be kicked in the balls with a size 13 steel-toed boot or size 14.

firefly, I am glad to finally agree with you on another thread. Airborne, I was getting anxious and sent my app out everywhere. I was then given very good advice and waited out for a good company. I couldn't be happier.

Mesa...They don't have to wear hats haha

Neither... you may die at TSA because they are actually upgrading 1500TT wonders next month. Friends don't let friends fly TSA (or Mesa).
PSA and ASA are hiring just as low time as Mesa or TSA... try one of those. |
Or try Pin or Eagle.
|
Go to Mesaba :D
|
neither.....be patient, build up your time, and apply to one of the top-tier regionals (SkyWest, AAEagle, Republic family)

There are sooooooooooooooo many other places better than those two. Just start sending resumes to every single one of them. You'll get at least a few phone calls out of the deal and will be so much happier. Heck, you'll be winning in the bargain by just avoiding feeling suicidal!
Most places are at least eager, if not desperate, for pilots. XJET Eagle Mesaba CHQ family Skywest ASA Comair PCL etc etc. Some of the ones I just listed may be in doldrums or less than ideal, but they are ALL much better than Mesa or TSA. |

I'm 110% sure POPA is less toolish than you make him out to be...although he is plenty toolish enough on his own accord. |

Sorry yo, in the middle of a 3 day right now and we were busy getting stupidly long reroutes up and down the coast yesterday. Wanted to get out to the job fair...might still do it but odds are slim at this point.
Who you talking about that's over here? T.U.? I was referring to the one and only MR J.S. |

Yes...because as indicated TSA was a means to an end for POPA. He didn't accept substandard working conditions in the hope of a fast upgrade; he did it to gain experience and go to an airline that fit his goals better. His path and yours are different, so quit making it seem like you're morally superior to him because you "held out for a good airline".

Now maybe I'm just ignorant, but life doesn't seem so bad here at TSA. Some crews that have been here longer have had a different experience, but mine hasn't been all that bad, even during my reserve month. I'm an April 07 hire and I'm holding 16 days off with weekends off (after a minor trip trade with open time). Last month I had 15 off with weekends off. Scheduling is the biggest complaint, but if you're not on reserve it's not really an issue.
Ok one thing that's definately substandard is medical insurance, but that should be taken care of with the new contract (whenever that long road ends). Second year FO pay is also substandard, but if you upgrade around a year or so... again not an issue. Not saying TSA is the bomb, but I don't think it should be placed next to Mesa, who doesn't even have block or better. I'm sure the day I get furloughed from TSA my opinion will change quick and in a hurry, hence why the crews who've been here 2+ years have a different opinion. |

BYU, if you are happy, then rock on. I agree that TSA should not be placed next to Mesa.
|
I am not flying for the airlines yet but being close to the same boat you are in I can say I have researched and found out both are not worth commuting for. There are a lot of other airlines that need pilots right now. I have to ask is there any airline you would not have to commute for? This is just my two cents and probally doesnt mean much becuase I am only instructor. Until Dec though then it is off to Mesaba. You should look at them!!!
|
I guess I'm ignorant too...TSA wasn't terrible to me, and they gave me a great head-start into the Regionals. They don't belong there next to Mesa, really.
But, not to let it be forgotten, I am far happier having left, even after giving up the quick upgrade :-) |

We might agree to disagree on the commuter friendly part. No airline is commuter friendly depending on how you look at it, what you are willing to do to get to work. I know someone that complained about an hour and half drive to get to work, so he moved 10 mins closer to the airport. I travel a long ways to be at work on time. There are a few things you discover as a commuter at TSA. How to bid your lines effectively. What pairing to drop into open time and trip trade with your fellow commuters. I have done this since Dec, I have never missed a flight or showed up late <Knock on Wood>. Last month I was only at my crashpad for 3 nights and this month so far 2 nights because I had 2 early shows. Commuting sucks, but someone has to do it. And guys Transstates is not that bad, it has been fun for me. I know everyone thinks they will screw us over one day, but based on my experience so far I will not put them in the same garbage bag as Mesa, atleast use GLAD. ExperimentalAB, if you are in RIC again you are welcome to stop by the crashpad for some cold beer. :) |
