I had no idea. That's terrible, however if you read the book flying blind there was one good screener (he is a customs and border protection inspector so I guess this is sort of out of the category) named Jose Melendez-Perez who actually stopped the 20th hijacker. Because of this there were only 4 hijackers on flight 93 and this may have been because Melendez-Perez stopped this man and they didnt have the muscle to fully overtake 93 from the passengers. However, he was a US customs agent, thus he was highly trained and educated. It's too bad this man doesn't get the credit that he truly deserves. I leave you with a short story of what happened and what this underappreciated man did.
A Saudi national on a Virgin Atlantic flight landed in Orlando. Since the subject's forms were not properly filled out, he was moved to a secondary interview, conducted by Perez. The Saudi did not have a return ticket or a hotel. He had $2,800 in cash and no credit cards. Questions to where he would stay and where he would go were evasive. Besides being quite hostile, the Saudi also made contradictory statements regarding his plans.
Perez decided to have him sent back, over his colleagues objections who said, "You can't do this. This guy is an Arab ethnic. You're racially profiling. You're going to get in real trouble, because it's against Department of Transportation policy to racially profile." Perez said, "I don't care. This guy's a bad guy. I can see it in his eyes." As he sent the Saudi back out of the United States, the man turned around to him and said, "I'll be back."
The Saudi was later captured in Afghanistan and is currently in Guantanamo.

There is a difference when you recruit from ex-military, college graduates and law enforcement bound applicants andwhen you recruit from the innercity. There is a difference.
I would rather see the TSA be replaced by US Customs. Its done that way in every other country that I've been in and out of. Let the real professionals do the job and let the other ones go back to whatever they were doing before. I'm sure they will find work or go back to the government check.

This was my favorite part of the entire article. I thought the whole problem was that the screeners DON'T have the ability to find bombs, but it turns out I was wrong. It's just that the fake bombs confuse the screeners and stop them from finding real bombs, I guess.

The TSA is a joke. It's ranks are filled with a bunch of ghetto-fied GED recipients who would otherwise be working McJobs. The entire concept it a joke. You take a handful of people, run them through a two week class and suddenly they are mini-Jack Bauers?
Please, the entire concept is a strain on the system, a strain on the airports, a strain on the customers flying, and does absolutely nothing to aid anybody.
You guys should really vote Ron Paul in the republican primaries. He already stated that he would eliminate the Department of Homeland security, which would get rid of those jokers effectively.

"Screeners who miss detonators, timers, batteries and blocks that resemble plastic explosives get remedial training."
What do people on an airplane that gets destroyed by these incompetent morons get ? The soloution is to fire the people working the checkpoint ON THE SPOT-"people died-you're fired".
