Looks like a wing caught fire before they hit the water.
2 babies on board. Very sad. |

Quite obvious the starboard wing separated from the A/C. The otherwise intact A/C went almost straight in and the blazing wing/fuel cell, on a different trajectory, followed. These old Grummans don’t fare well with out-of-control engine fires. The wing spar tends to burn through in about 2 minutes, if you don’t get the fire under control. Don’t know if it was an explosion or fire (investigation will tell), but whatever occurred did so at or near the starboard wing root, as the port wing and fuselage appeared to be quite visibly intact in the death plunge. God rest their souls |
