ERJ 145 question
Hello all:
I just have a quick question. why is the leading edge of the 145 so damn rough. It would seem to me at a quick glance it would be better to have a smooth leading edge? Some of my reasons why it might not be... it is thicker because of the heat of anti ice or it is pitted from constant contact with clouds ice dust rain? or it might have something to do with controling the stagnation point of the leading edge can any one give me some insight thanks Reeves |
I'm not familiar with the ERJ wing, if whether you're talking about wear/tear or a design trait.
On the CRJ, new leading edges are nice, shiny, polished aluminum. The older ones have the feeling of fine grit sand paper, from the constant pattering of sand, ice, rain, etc. |
AE ERJ's leading edges are always rough too. They're kinda old so I just figured wear and tear from ice, wind, snow, rain, etc

Could it have to do with boundary layers and adding some turbulence to smooth out the air just above it? I"m thinking something like a VG, but smaller? If I'm wildly off base, please someone correct me.

I can tell the difference from older planes to newer ones. The old ones definately have a little more wear on the leading edge.

Whenever one of ours come out of the paint shop, the new leading edge they put on can be used as a mirror. Always gotta be looking my best, ya know. But the older ones look like somebody has sand blasted them with very coarse sand, or even pebbles. Oddly enough, that's exactly what has happened.

Ours are that way - some polished, some rough, some "normal". Sometimes it's the whole l.e. that is polished, sometimes just a strip here and there. When they get rough mx will polish them to return the surface to a smooth condition. I'm sure there's probably a minimum thickness or similar before the l.e. has to be replaced altogether.

You know I'd love to see what a new leading edge looks like...so it is shiney huh? And smooth and pretty? Hmm...guess I'll never see one at TSA.
