I'm sure you hear that "are you trying to get enough time to fly for the majors?" I know I've heard that asked of more than one cargo pilot. One of the great things about it would be just to tell people "I deliver boxes for UPS/FedEx." I'm pretty sure that would curtail a lot of tedious conversation right there. Or possibly just say, "I work for an international shipping company. Mostly quality control, making sure things get from point A to point B intact and on time. The job requires me to travel a lot."

But I'm with the other guy, "I work in systems management for aluminum tubing. It's kind of boring."

Or if I'm drunk, I train the starfish at Sea World.

my favorite is "so youre a copilot? how much longer before they actually let you fly the plane?"

I was on a deadhead up to ORD once and got into a random conversation with the well dressed chick next to me. About 20 min. into the conversation she said, "Oh so you're a pilot?" No you dumb b!tch I just ride around in the back of random airplanes wearing a UNIFORM for fun.

Meanwhile...

I was in a strip club in MEM with a few friends (not in uniform though... he he) and the chick in my buddy's lap asked what we did. He said, "We're pilots." and she quickly rolled her eyes, snickered and said, "Yea whatever well 'yall are too young to fly for FedEx anyway."

It's sad when STRIPPERS can show more intelligence than the average traveling business woman!!!

But the dog passing away, thats sad. Sorry to hear it.
