Yep it's more complicated than it sounds...I'll take the seniority system any day, and twice on tuesday.

Better than a number which could conceivably trap me at a horrible company forever.

How's that? You always have a choice. You may not like the options but they always exist. If you want to lose the number go into management.

We have seniority for a reason...read up on early airlines in the 1920's and 30's. I don't want to have to spend my days off hanging out in the RCP's office kissing butt to try to get a good schedule.

But a national list would be nice.

Considering those are the top two things that determine where you get hired...I don't see how they DON'T play a factor :D

Ever aviation job I've ever had was arranged through a friend...not sure how your posse rolls, but I don't have to kiss my friends' butts (optional for some of the female ones maybe).

There's a lot less politics in the airline biz than most other careers.

Oh, you mean the legacy guys still flying that got their pensions stolen from underneath them too, right? Hate to say it but that was worse than anything JO did to me during my time at YV. The big problem is ALPA. One union, one voice, one standard of pay for equipment type flown. Pretty obvious the decentralized approach isn't working anymore.
