A sad day at MAG, we have lost someone to desperate means
Today MAG lost a pilot who committed suicide. Details are sketchy, but apparently the individual failed a drug test and took his life shortly thereafter. We all mourn the loss greatly.
While I give this person the benefit of the doubt that the test was erroneous, I encourage all persons with a substance abuse problem to seek help. Please, before it is too late, take the bull by the horns and do what it takes. I know how difficult this can be having observed a family member battle addiction. Your loved ones will support you if you seek help. These are desperate times, please do not resort to desperate measures- there is always hope.

Terrible that somebody would be driven to drugs and to commit suicide. We can all second guess and have 20/20 hindsight, but drug problems can be and are real problems and can happen to anybody. It's not worth it, but if you get yourself into a situation out of your control, it's much better to seek help and get healthy than to allow yourself to lose control, whether personally or professionally.
Sad day anybody dies.

Suicide, under any circumstance, has a jolting, rippling effect to anyone who knew the individual. Most importantly, the family of the individual is no doubt stuuned and devastated. I know....I have experienced a loss of someone close due to suicide.
My sympathies for your loss. I'm sure all of our pilot brothers and sisters echo the same.

There has to be more to the story than just a failed drug screen. I don't want to turn this into a discussion as to wether suicide is right or not, but I would like to know what it is in a persons mind that makes them say it is better to blow my head off than to live with________ fill in the blank. Obviously they are not thinking correctly.

We as pilots love our careers, so I could see losing an airline job be just as heartbreaking.
It's what we do afterwards that defines our charachter and not just give up.
But if you want to know what goes through someones mind that makes them do this, it's hard to say. My guess is pain. Excrutiating heartache and pain and the only they can think of to make it go away is take the easy way out, OR, perhaps he didn't want to deal with the publicity or the shame of being known as an airline pilot that had a failed drug test on their record.
And you're right, they arent thinking clearly and correctly. Which is why having support of friends and family under intense emotional downfall is sooo very important in times like this. Sometimes, all it takes to have them snap out of it is to offer your shoulder and ear. Othertimes, it can take much more than that.
