BoredwLife 03-20-2008 11:04 AM

Are you looking at regionals or majors?

threegreen 03-20-2008 11:12 AM

only regionals
i have 400tt and 33m (by the time i will apply should have around 550-700, depending if i get more students or not)

Mabee201 03-20-2008 11:19 AM

RAH is still hiring. I have no idea how much more they plan on doing. I know we are still taking deliveries of 175s, but with mainline cutting routes, I imagine we'll slow down at some point.

UnlimitedAkro 03-20-2008 11:20 AM

American Eagle

rustypilot 03-20-2008 11:22 AM

RAH is pretty strict with their mins. I believe they're still in the 800 range for TT.

My guess is that competetive hiring mins at most regionals will come up very quickly, due to the slowdown. Possible exception for the usual bottom feeders.

threegreen 03-20-2008 12:03 PM

little upset, just missed the hiring boom by couple months...thats aviation for ya

kansas 03-20-2008 12:07 PM

AWAC is still hiring as far as I know.

thepotato232 03-20-2008 12:21 PM

Mesaba and PSA are still going, to add to the list.

Bond 03-20-2008 01:45 PM

I have to agree with the coments regarding the mins coming up on the basis of the industry wide slow down. With most majors slowing their hiring, and all airlines cutting back on domestic feed, demand for "qualified" professionals will slow allowing airlines to get picky again. I say if the current trend continues, will be looking at the 1000 and 100 again at the very least. Not to mention jr f/o's jumping ship from any number of regionals to the one's with more movement.

norskman2 03-20-2008 01:51 PM

PSA still needs people although they seem to be slowing down quite a bit too. Only 4 out of 15 ppl got offers from the last interview as far as I know.

cfii2007 03-20-2008 02:48 PM

I applied to them...have not heard back yet.

CRJDriver 03-20-2008 02:57 PM

Comair is still hiring about 5-10 month. Mins are 600TT/100ME.

grossole 03-20-2008 04:38 PM

Go team hulas!

I'm not so sure about this, I guess we'll see.

From what I have seen, the supply of 1000+ hr applicants is exhausted. The only airlines that can hold to higher mins are the ones that don't need any more pilots. Presently, this means pretty much everyone...but that could change.

For instance: suppose (and this is not even a hypothesis, just a 'what if') ASA were to absorb 20% of Comair flying and all Mesa Delta flying east of Texas (I don't even know if Mesa operates west of TX for DAL...just an example). If that were to happen, we'd (ASA) need more pilots ASAP.

If we insisted on 1000+ hr applicants, we'd never fill the seats. All of the 1000+ hr applicants who wanted to work for ASA (or any other regional) already do.

This present condition is sort of unique and interesting: demand is slowing, costs are increasing...but there's still a shortage of qualified pilots. With oil driving training costs even higher and airlines moving into a less profitable era, I would not expect this shortage to be remedied anytime soon.

It'll be interesting to watch.

ExperimentalAB 03-20-2008 05:21 PM

Well when everyone does start to hire again, that non-pool of 1000+ applicants will be no more. All those that were hoping to get get their feet wet with the Regionals will have spent time CFI'ing or otherwise timebuilding their way into the 1000 hour regime.

All those screaming about wet-commercials in the right-seat can now breathe a collective sigh of relief LoL

rynrock9 03-20-2008 05:22 PM

Here I sit with over 1000 hours and wondering what is going to happen with guys who are finishing school up in the next month or two. On top of all of the hiring freezes a surplus of 1000 hour CFI's that just got their bacholar degrees. I guess it wouldnt be aviation if it didnt keep you awake at night. . .

starflyer 03-20-2008 05:50 PM

Eagle is still aggressively hiring, and so is Pinnacle and others. Just cast your resume out and see if you get any bites, then go from their. Don't wait long though, because mins may increase in the near future as rickair7777 stated.

floyd78 03-20-2008 05:53 PM

Word today in my ground school here today at PSA is no new ground schools until June...There is only one person in my class that is under 1000 hrs! Food for thought:) I do believe that this is mainly due to sim backup though so don't lose hope...

flynavyj 03-20-2008 10:37 PM

yeh, have a friend at PSA right now and he's got a nice month paid vacation before starting sim, not to bad, unfortunately for him, he's going to be on the backside of the hiring wave, at least for the time being.

I also believe that minimums will come back up, at least competitive minimums. I doubt you'll see companies change the policies overnight to 1000/100, however, when everyone who comes in has 400-600 hrs, and 25-70 multi, i'm sure the hire time pilots will be picked first, If the airlines are able to fill the classes they need, then there's no need to be looking at a guy with 350 hrs, unless theres just no-one else available....which i believe , there will be.

usmc-sgt 03-21-2008 03:38 AM

Colgan would hire you as well as PSA and Cape Air maybe as SIC

Seems this is common at PSA. 5 out of the 20 of us in the October(ish) interview were given offers.

HercDriver130 03-21-2008 08:00 AM

RAH is still holding classes through April .... beyond that is anybodies guess at this point.

121PyLut 03-21-2008 09:11 AM

Wal-Mart is ALWAYS hiring!!

PCLCREW 03-21-2008 09:55 AM

PCL only hires guys with less then 1000TT if you came from one of those CRJ programs... had a buddy I tried to get in and HR told me if he goes to ATP and spends 5000K on a CRJ program he's in for an interview, otherwise is 1000TT.

That was the first and last time I try to help this Sh&% hole find pilots...

waflyboy 03-21-2008 11:12 AM

Ameriflight will hire you as an instructor pilot with less than 1000 hours if you have your CFI ratings. I hear the pay isn't terrible.

uvmflier 03-21-2008 11:33 AM

Just curious guys. I flew with this CFI the guy had 2000 plus hours and 200 multi. During the crazy hiring boom we had over the year not Comair, Mesa, TSA, XJT,AWAC, CHQ, Piedmont, or anybody would respond to his application. Yes I know even Mesa. The only thing hes lacking is that he doesn't have a College degree. But that still sounds fishy to me. I tried to help him out and thought Mesa would have called him back but no.

Maybe hes not telling me the full story? To this day hes still sitting there miserable instructing as everyone else has long moved on.

uvmflier

flycrj200 03-21-2008 11:57 AM

Mesa will hire you if you either have a pulse or you are breathing.

Better submit my resume. LOL :D

rynrock9 03-21-2008 02:25 PM

My issue is trying to decide whether to leave a potentially good 135 company, or get a spot at RAH. I have held out for a couple of months to get to the top regional in case something like this would happen (slowdown), in order to weather the storm at a respectable and hopefully comfortable regional. So in that respect im not going to go to mesa or any other low time regional, no offense.

So I can either stay at my current company or try my luck with the regional game, the problem is potential can only go so far.

rickB 03-21-2008 05:53 PM

ya had an interview scheduled with psa for april 8th... got a call from chief pilot saying all interviews and some training classes cancelled until june... dang! RAH and AWAC here i come !!!! haha

cfii2007 03-23-2008 03:31 PM

135 freight companies are still hiring and hurting for pilots......

PDQBoy 03-23-2008 04:00 PM

Regional Prospects turned 50

Don't ask me why but have the bug to apply to the regionals would like to be based (eventually) in DTW (current home 20 min away).
Stats are : Age 50 6410TT/4110ME (all pic)/ Former airnet. ATP/CFII/ME
Before you ask, yes to financially secure not bothered by low pay, no debts what so ever/wife supports big time etc. Excellent physical etc. My eyes are wide open not wide-shut.

Currently self organizing my own ground study course for all subjects anticipated by the gouges etc. Honestly what are my chances? I am looking at XJ and 9E. Should I look at others? I want a good one I can stay at 10 years.

Are there any other pilots in the DTW area interested in a study partner?

Thanks for your time

usmc-sgt 03-23-2008 04:45 PM

XJ is a great regional but with their current situation they have completely slowed to stopped hiring and are not planning on having classes for a while as well as have asked for voluntary leave of absences from some employees.

9E...there is a two page thread going right now on why it stinks there. I do not work there and know nothing about them besides the thread I just read but like every other regional in the universe, some are happy there, some are not.

As far as hiring is concerned you probably have a better chance with 9E if those are your only two choices.

Id suggest opening another thread in the regional forums asking for some advice for some more exposure from pilots who work at either airline. I do not work for either but have respect for both of the pilot groups and would go to either one myself.

kdoner 03-23-2008 07:15 PM

this sucks.... 2 more months till school's out... and the hiring slows....

Jetjock65 03-23-2008 09:22 PM

I was supposed to take my commercial ride 3 days after 9/11 happened. I was attending a school where instructors were leaving with wet tickets to go fly for a regional, and then as we all know all that stopped, and they were headed back to instructing. I know some may think this is a corny thing to say but , everything happens for a reason. If things wouldnt have hapened the way they did I would have gone to a regional almost right away and would have missed out on one of the best flying jobs ever, flying a Corp. Jet for a Pvt. family. I had a great time working for them and would still be flying "vacation" trips with them to this day if they would'nt have sold the airplane. The new owners and the other pilots that they hired made me hate Corp. aviation and now I'm back to the 121 game. Moral of the story is that sometimes we get bummed because things don't work out the way we think they should at that particular time, but in the long run everything works out. For all of you that have some what missed this past hiring wave, brush it off continue flying and trust me your chance will come. Remember everyone, people in this country have to fly, first of all they are addicted to it, and second its still cheaper to fly even if we raise ticet prices than it is to drive somewhere long distance. Relax and have fun your time will come soon enough.
Good luck and keep your heads up.:)
