Thanking Service Men/Women
 

Any of you guys thank the US Military for their service when you see them on board your flight???

I always make a point to announce it over the PA when we pull up to the gate....had a Capt last week call me a "Dork" afterwards...and I just let him have it...had a feeling he was a bit of a socialist anyway.

Anyway If you guys can remember...anytime you see a soldier on board..dont forget to thank them. It goes a long way.....trust me

I think calling him out or saying he is a socialist is a bit of an overstep, A lot of people in the US (70% according to the last poll) are extremely frustrated with the war and sometimes we (I include myself in this group) vent this frustration on the troops instead of on who really is to blame (topic for another discussion in another place). I try to avoid even talking about the subject, so I would understand why the captain would not like to do it.

I understand that the troops are not to blame for the actions of their superiors, but feeling angry at them is a mistake I have made a few times out of frustration for the situation, and for that I truly am sorry.

That's why they need all the support they can get! They get enough cold shoulders..

You're a good man. Anybody who doesn't appreciate what they are doing in a time of war REGARDLESS of their political viewpoint has serious issues.

And if the guy was a bit of socialist, what's wrong with calling him that? I don't mind if someone recognizes me for or by what I stand for.

That's really big of you to vent your frustrations out on the people who are protecting your right to vent your frustrations.

All I can say is that I am ashamed of feeling that way, I have never been rude or insulted or much less treated a member of the military wrong, but it is just a feeling of anger and frustration that I have felt a couple of times (not always) I see a service member or when I see one of those ridiculous hypocritical support our troops car ribbons.

Is this right? probably not, but I wont go into a discussion about why I feel this way in this forum, if you want to know my reasons PM me and I will gladly answer.

I always thank any servicemen/women, either before the flight or while saying goodbye to the pax.

If I am lucky enough to get 1st class while non-revving to work or anywhere else, I trade seats with any servicemen/women in coach.

They (and their families) make pretty substantial sacrifices. I'm surprised at your captain's reaction. He's entitled to his opinion, but saying that was in poor taste.

Fit29: You say you have your reasons for "a feeling of anger and frustration" towards those who have volunteered to give their lives if necessary, to protect your right to say stuff like that.

You may want to re-evaluate those reasons.

Good for you!!! I put in my 20+ but am not a big fan of what's going on, however, that doesn't mean I don't support the TROOPS. Far from it as a matter of fact. They're just doing what they're told...........
We do have a flight attendant at CAL who's a friend of mine and her husband is in Iraq. He's been over there for over a year and a half with no end in sight for him and I've tried to help her the best I can with friendship and support. It's tough raising a family when their dad or mom is 7500 miles away. At any rate, she has had several fund raisers for the troops of which I've been glad to donate to. What does tick me off is that when I saw her the other day, she had taken up a "letter writing campaign" for many of the troops in the military hospitals. The letters were mailed to "any troop" at the hospitals but were RETURNED since they thought they might contain "terrorist threats". I guess, like that CA, goodness isn't appreciated much anymore. Sad....:(
