second jobs as FO

I start training soon at AE, but was just wondering the FO's here if any of them have second jobs. Not just other flying jobs (instructing, ferry, etc.) but jobs such as bartending or a business out of their home.

I was seriously considering this but want to know if its do-able or better yet practical. Knowing that I'll be living on Ramen noodles for a while is fine, just want to make a little extra coin to pay of some debt and so I can enjoy monday specials of $9 beer nights downtown chicago.

p.s. I do really want to fly as much as possible my first year.

.02 are welcome

RJ Pilot 04-21-2008 01:51 PM

Instead of spending 9$ for beer, save it and pay some debt.

RamenNoodles 04-21-2008 01:59 PM

I worked at Enterprise Rent-A-Car during college, and they allowed me to transfer to a new location and wash cars for as a side job while I was on reserve my first year. $8/hr.

If you got your BA you can be a Sub teacher at up to $50 bucks a day aint to bad

I know its sound bad but you can be a van driver also

Pick up open time from fellow pilots that need/want more time off, or pick it up from the company (especially if there is a bonus for doing such a thing). This allows you to only have to worry about one job, build more flight time and experience, upgrade faster, and make some extra cash with minimal hassle. Unless you find a real honey of a 2nd job, it will be hard to beat just flying a little more.

bizlake 04-21-2008 02:19 PM

Im still flight instructing and but not making much money, so on the side I am starting to valet park cars. Its nice! Only work 4 hours a night but make up to $200+ a night. Schedule is flexible so you dont have to work till 2am and then fly at 5am. Check it out.

Roper92 04-21-2008 02:25 PM

Where do you do that? What a gig! I was thinking about being a driver for a car service.

Kansas, only line holders can enjoy that luxury.

IlliniPilot99 04-21-2008 02:34 PM

thanks to everyone for the comments...im thinking about bartending, did it in college and made around $200 a night...I'll look into the valey

although the flying more would be better!

Lets be realistic here, we are pilots.

bizlake 04-21-2008 03:16 PM

cfii2007 04-21-2008 03:17 PM

Prostitution is an option.

"instead of spending $__ for a beer" is not an option, ever

AHHH..... The dream job. This profession is pathetic.

LifeNtheFstLne 04-21-2008 04:40 PM

Many moons ago as a new CRJ F/O at now vanished Atlantic Coast Airlines I worked at the mall at Abercrombie & Fitch. I got more ass than a toilet seat. I suggest that. The hours are flexible.

cfii2007 04-21-2008 05:05 PM

that's what I was thinking.. they pay almost $150/a day in the NYC area and about $75 in Florida.

Roll Inverted and Pull 04-21-2008 05:24 PM

Before you take an extra job doing any flying, check out your contract. At my airline, our contract states that all flying for pay will be for the company. Also, and probably not too important for you youngsters, in case you "buy the farm" or are even hurt while flying for an outside company, your medical coverage and company life insurance is invalid. I vote for the bartending job...

TBucket 04-21-2008 06:48 PM

If you're in a major city, you might want to look in to bartending with the local sports team... When I was CFI-ing I bartended in the suites at Texas Stadium during Cowboys games.... You could pull in $400 a night if you had a good suite...

flynavyj 04-21-2008 07:40 PM

have an FO over here who drives a cab on the side and makes an extra 200 bux or so a nite.

ExperimentalAB 04-21-2008 07:50 PM

ebuhoner 04-21-2008 07:56 PM

You could also go to $1 beer night on Thursday night at Cans on Damen in Wicker Park. Only a 4 block stumble for me!

IronWalt 04-22-2008 09:05 AM

When I was a regional FO and Capt, I went back to the University and finished up my 4 year degree so I could have a better shot at the majors. And apparently it worked.

CloudPilot57 04-22-2008 09:40 AM

I had a buddy in college do pizza delivery, made some pretty decent cash on some nights.

bizlake 04-22-2008 10:36 AM

yeah, Im starting to get nervous. I graduate soon and the funds are starting to dwindle. Thinking about possibly getting a better CFI gig along with that valet parking stuff. I applied to ASA about a day late I think, just my luck, and eagle the other day. Any idea how long they (eagle) take to get back to you?

zondaracer 04-22-2008 01:59 PM

I might be missing something but what does $9 special beer night include? For me, a beer night special meant 25 cents if you guessed the correct side of the coin toss, or $2 you call its. $9 all you can drink maybe?

applied at AE, got their standard "were reviewing your app" email in 1 hour, then about 20 hours later got the email invite to interview.

p.s. drop the $9 beer thing...i was being sarcastic to prove a point

bizlake 04-22-2008 02:11 PM

Well that cant be good then. I used airlineapps, completed it sunday night. Still no word from them. I have 725/20. Hopefully it works out. Congrats though, thats great! what were your times if you dont mind me asking?

POPA 04-22-2008 02:29 PM

I have two side jobs: traveling and drinking. I'm very good at both.

513/62 were my times, gl

Roper92 04-22-2008 06:19 PM

Wow. I remember the days when you had to have 100 multi to get a good gig.

Rocket Bob 04-22-2008 07:01 PM

I remember talking to Eagle back in '94 and they wanted 1500 multi, now those were the good ole days...

CloudPilot57 04-23-2008 07:07 AM

I know a guy that got hired at peidmont with 8 multi...wow

IlliniPilot99 04-23-2008 07:40 AM

my cousin was hired back in 96 when he had 4100 and 650 and AE is the only regional that would talk to him, no body else gave him the time of day.

luckily at the time he said AE was one of the few that you didn't have to pay for training.
