Low Timers in Hiring Pools

It seems after reading posts on a few message boards that many of you plan on just sitting around at mom and dads house and waiting for class 2-3+ months from now.

This could probably be one of the bigger mistakes you could make out of your short flying career thus far. Keep flying whatever you are flying, and don't be slackers, log that time, and get at least 135 IFR minimums before you feel, oh hey I got a job, I'm gonna slack now.

You may be extremely sorry with your poorly made decision of sitting on the couch for a few months, waiting. Things change so fast in this business, if you are looking at a class 3+ months from now, there's a good change it will be rescheduled, or possibly cancelled due to fuel costs, and consolidation of legacy carriers.

all ready working for a 135 carrier boss, planning on staying there too until any other phone call might happen. thanks for your words of wisdom though, i guess.

i'd say the worry would be sitting in the pool for several months and losing not just instrument currency but more importantly instrument proficiency. Then getting to your class, and busting out of training during the simulator portion and being back on the street, only this time, hiring is stringent, and you can't find 5 other opportunities an arms reach away. If you're low time, in the pool, my advice would be to remain proficient for when the time comes to get back in the game....that goes for high time guys as well, jobs may be scarce for all.

airwaves why did you start this thread? this applies to at most a handful of people who can do whatever they want while they wait for a class date, including sitting on their butts if they want. youre weird

Sorry we aren't all Skygods like you.

Ghilis101, Thank you. If I want to sit on my butt at my house in Dayton Ohio and relax playing golf waiting on my PSA Ground school date in June, then I will take my 3 weeks off from my already 400+ hrs I've flown this year. Then, if my class gets pushed back again I will go back to my old job that has been promised to me to always be there if times get hard. Sound like a good Idea Airwaves or is that not alright by you?

classes are supposed to actually get pushed back for longer than that.....

bradeku1008 05-03-2008 07:56 PM

Yea, I got the e mail the other day. It looks like my class will be the last for a while. When I talked to Lisa last month on the phone she made it sound like the june class will be it for a while. I hope it dosen''t get pushed back again but If it does then o well....

I have been in this biz for a while. I have seen and heard the above comment more than a few times from new guys. When you train at an airline, instrument proficiency has very little to do with your passing or failing the course. You will do the same type of approaches over and over again. There will be no surprises on your check ride. What messes up new pilots in training is themselves. They get psyched out because they are being exposed to flows, profiles, and dual crew procedures. Most people who have been flying single pilot or flight instructing find it very difficult to now have to ask either the non-flying pilot or the auto pilot to do something for them. When they say that you are behind the aircraft it is usually this area that you are behind in. Practicing your flows and profiles every day initially with your partner once assigned, will go a long way in your success. While waiting for your class date it would help you to get the limitations and any memory items committed to memory. Just less to do. when you get to indoc. Those that have not flown 121 will have to learn duty and flight time regs, 3585 situations and lots of other company specific regulations. If you are sitting on the couch you are doing yourself a disservice and will be making your training just that much harder. Hope this helps.
