Follow yours and don't let anyone, especially on this board, live your life for you. If you're as passionate about this profession as I am, you won't regret it. Best of luck!

i came from the same sort of position you are in. had a good professional job. but i wanted to be a pilot. always have. i have had to make some sacrifices but in the end i would do it all over again. people who say go to med school, or be a lawyer, or get your mba have no idea what it is like to be on that side of the fence. so do what you want. i came from the medical field to do this and my life is 10 times better for it.

This is the best advise....ALWAYS FOLLOW your DREAMS Pilot's complain "that's what we do" :D

I wouldn't ask that question on this forum. If it is your dream that become an airline pilot than do it and don't listen to all of the negativity.

Most of the opinions you get will be from guys that have been in the industry less than two years.

Right now the industry is down but it will turn back around by the time you finish all your training and gain enough experience to be marketable.

I have been in the industry for more than ten years and I still love it. That is even working for a company that everyone is saying to stay away from.

It's what you make of it. Good advice, Denver.

Thank you for your advise. I don't want to engulf myself in a dream that won't come true or unattainablea and be able to progress in the occupation.

You have to ask yourself if you really want to fly. If your answer is yes, then you have to start your flight training and find out if you really want to fly. However, you also have to think about your family. Right now the industry is in turmoils and the outlook looks a little bleak. My advice to you is to get a decent paying management job somewhere and fly on weekends and see if you have the knack for it. Get all your ratings on a part time basis instead of spending a large lump sum to one those full time flight schools that charges inexhorbitant amount. FYI, I am also former military and I did it the old fashioned way, one rating at a time part time. It worked out great for me.

Go for it!! I delayed my flight training for three years because of September 11th. Had I just gone ahead and started my flight training then,I would be a captain at a regional by now. Instead I am a first year first officer. If you want to be a pilot then go for it. Don't wait and try to time the cycles of the industry. Everything is unpredictable. Just enjoy the process. Don't rush. Enjoy your time as a student, enjoy your time as a flight instructor, and ultimately you will enjoy yourself as an airline pilot.

Future

No one can really say what will happen. However this down turn is unlike any other in aviation history. Our entire profession and aviation way of life is in danger. The odds are that aviation will be a miserable place to be over the next ten years or so.

If you can not be satisfied with picking a new dream and can survive the loss if your career does not get off the ground then go for it. However if you have a family in tow (or want one) or nothing else to rely on then I would pass.

Until Pete files bankruptcy because he is in debt up to his ear lobes in school debt and broke because he can't make any money pursuing his dream.

my 2 cents

Go for it, regardless of your family. You'll more than likely end up blaming 'em later on if you don't try it. If it dosen't work out, at least you gave it a try. Good luck to you.

I agree with SkyHigh on this one, in only that this downturn really is unlike anything the industry has previously seen. We're in uncharted territory here...
