Default How can ALPA do this?

I'm still a little clueless on the ALPA subject.

Somebody remind me how I can refuse their services and not gain anything through them, (BY CHOICE), but still have them take MY money?

and how is this legal?

I understand they try to make things "better" for the pilots, and are elected officials.

It just seems like i go to work for an office, they say, "hey we get the 'daily sentinel newspaper' delivered to us here. If you want the daily paper, its $20.00/month, or if you dont want the newspaper it's still going to cost you $10.00/month

They represent the entire pilot group... trust me, one day when you need their services, you will be glad they are there. I dont think there is a way you can 'opt out' of the union. They created the very contract you are working under and will protect you should things go wrong medically, etc...

Is there any way to get rid of their insurance plans? I keep getting bills every month for LOL, Life, and some other insurance that I never signed up for.

Yes, all you have to do is call the phone number. Automated system to drop the insurance. If you cannot find it on the statements they give you, check ALPA's website.

You still recieve the renumeration that ALPA negitiated . . . your company may have eliminated pensions, insurance plans, 401Ks, etc if there was no union . . . who knows in these times???

Because you're still covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that they spent money negotiating and enforcing on your behalf.

Yes you are clueless. It's YOUR money that ALPA negotiated for you to have in the first place.

Unless you are a USAIR pilot who had to sit and watch a judge allow the company to liquidate all of their pensions. ALPA did a hell of a job there.

Can someone PM me with this number? I cannot seem to find it anywhere on the ALPA national and local website.

The problem I see with ALPA taking our money even if we are not part of the union, is that if we get upset with them and say that we are no longer satisfied with their services we can get out of the union. But becuase we are still supporting them with our money, ALPA is not that concerned when we leave. I think that pilots have given up some of their individual power by letting ALPA do this.

I think this outweighs the fact that those pilots not part of ALPA still have some benefit from a union.

Nice Revisionist History.

Actually it was their MEC that went AGAINST ALPA's advice and voted for Binding Arbitration. If you make your bed you have to sleep in it. They got hosed, its not ALPA's fault when they legally can't do anything once the Arbitrator makes his decision...everybody knows you don't ever go to binding arbitration, there's nothing to gain. Now the SAME MEC is in charge of USAPA...wow, big change
