Yea now isnt the best time as far as trying to get hired as an airline pilot goes. But there are other types of flying out there that you can and should look into, before all the fourloughees do it.

There are some airlines that are still hiring, I know PDT is planning on starting interviews again somewhere towards the end of 08... thats the rumor anyways, but I imagine competitive flight time minimums would go up.

Just because this guy is a CFI, he should know everything about every regional? Get real. He's probably doing his job TEACHING rather than drooling about some freshly painted regional jet.

The current trend is the opposite of hiring which is called furloughing. Several airlines have ceased operation this year and most are furloughing at least some pilots.

As US airlines continue to draw down capacity in Q3 and Q4 expect more furloughs.

Bottom line is that it is an extremely challenging time to be looking for work as a pilot.

It's not dark yet! Things are going to get much worse as oil climbs to 200. 5 to 10 years if not more, we're looking at another great depression. I hope I am wrong, but the high oil, food, and energy prices will continue to kill us until we fix it.

Look into gasification of coal, it might be what saves us.

I think you should keep trying. If you are at an airport with some corporate flight departments get to know them take every chance to fly with one of them Fly all the different airplanes you can get your hands on. Remember that there is more to flying than just 121.

As a professional in any buisness not just aviation its important to know of any problems challenging it. And as a professional aviator you can't but help but notice that fuel prices are wreaking havoc on the industry. Naturally when this crunch happens airlines feel a huge pinch and they often reduce capacity which means they need less pilots.

It wasn't an offensive question, it just seems like it may be flamebait. Its really not a good time to be looking for an airline job, lots of guys on the street right now. Keep pressing on, but don't quit your day job if you have one. There is an excess of capacity and of course high oil prices right now which is a double whammy on the airline industry.

Take it easy on the guy. He asked a simple question, and doesn't need to be harrased about his "situational awareness". He even said he's read on here that there's a standstill. He's doing his homework, he's just asking the guys on the front lines their opinion on the matter. What might be obvious to us could be no so clear to people optomistically looking in.

That being said, I agree with meritflyer and Rama. There's plenty of commercial flying to be had these days, just not with the airlines right now.
