I agree with Rickair and longboarder. The system is far from perfect, but it is completely necessary. Our airline IDs would be incredibly easy to duplicate, fake and use in conjunction with a storebought airline uniform. Until an incredibly reliable biometric scanning system is implemented in our airports, thorough screening of any person that wishes to have access to secure areas is necessary.
Are there a number of TSA agents out there on a power trip, rude, or otherwise unpleasant? Yes, but you might notice these qualities are found in almost any group of homo-sapiens, including pilots! Although I put my trust in my peers when reading checklists, and performing other crew member functions, that isn't to say that I would trust that person to make sound decisions in every aspect of their life (I mean shouldn't we all be a bit weary of any pilot who chose to go to Mesa ;) ). I don't enjoy being hassled, but it is for the greater good. Inefficiencies are inherent in government agencies so I accept that and I attempt to be all the more vigilant in my own travels instead of spending my time griping about others' shortcomings. |
They just better not take my lunch box...

What is wrong with airline id and passport as in the Crewpass test, give off this biometric crap...which is more easily defeated!

"but now I have to take off my shoes before I ride on a airliner"
A couple days ago I took my shoes off. The TSA screener pulled me aside and told me pilots in uniform don't have to take them off unless they will beep going through the detector. Mine won't and I will stop taking them off when in uniform. |

But I can't imagine how anybody would think that CASS is as secure as a some type of retinal/fingerprit or other biometric scan would be |

Have you been to JFK and seen the turn-styles at ramp level? Well, I have as I used to walk by them on the way into the terminal, so i think I have a bit of an idea what does and does not happen there. Apparently more so than you. I never said I had a front row seat at the SIDA access point, nor do I want one. The things that happen at you station are indicative to YOUR station and your station only. I do know for a fact there are some airports where the CSA can bypass screening altogether if they have a SIDA badge. Which is the way it was for ALL SIDA badge holders before the invent of the TSA. Is this what it is boiling down too, a CSA agent saying I have it rougher than you because I get screened X times a day? If so you are missing the point of the argument. They are screening the wrong people is the argument. As in screening the flight crews. A waste of money and rescources. Ok, let me try to break it down a bit because clearly you are missing the WHOLE point. My reply to your comment was due to earlier in the thread when you said pilots are getting screened however ramp agents/fuelers/cleaners aren't. No, I am not sitting in the flight deck nor will I ever say what you did or didn't see. Hell, I haven't even had the opportunity to work in JFK however, I have worked in various airports in Florida, Ohio, Vermont, and Michigan. You are right, different airports/stations has different ways of operating. And yes, I have witnessed pilots getting mugged by the TSA. I have delayed flights to wait for jumpseaters who called me personally just to get them on. But to say, CSA don't get screened is definitely a false statement. Now if I misunderstood you then I apologize, have a heineken on me. Again, no arguements, because WE ALL get violated by the TSA MOB. |

The TSA is worthless.
Pilots are screened. But gate agents and rampers (the ones with unrestricted access to the baggage compartments) are not. This is the thread that I am going based off of. Ok, so it wasn't you who said it(another Heineken on me) but this is not true. |
