PIC Turbine Time

Ive read alot of stuff on here about PIC time, and if you can get it, PIC Turbine, and how its so important in landing a good job.

What are your thoughts on 135 PIC Turbine in a Caravan?

Do companies care its single time, or do they just care that its PIC turbine?

Im currently flying single pilot 135 in a Caravan sitting on 1700tt, 500multi, 400turbine, 1500PIC.
Should i continue to the notorious 1000 hours of turbine in the caravan, or try to get a job building multi turbine?

Career goal is either SWA or NJ, or a Major.

Thanks in advance for your input:)

it seems you have the resume to get a job at a regional or maybe even just a better freight job with someone who flies good airplanes. from what i have read here and other places, the caravan isnt exactly the most prestigious aircraft in the eyes of interviewers.. yes its turbine, but there is a big difference between that and say, a king air.. the turbine twin adds a little more in terms of difficulty and looks better for the interviewers

I just posted this in the other thread - "Boy, I don't know for sure. I haven't had that conversation with an hiring folks at a major. I know you would be picked up at a regional as long as you had 80 or so hours of multi in something. If I hazard to guess, with the exception of military single engine fighter turbine time, I think the major airlines really expect the PIC turbine requirment to be multi-engine." I see in this post you have the multi time. Are guys at your company getting hired to a major? If not, I think that might be your anwser.

Thanks for your replies.

Im not all that fond of going to the regionals unless it would be a good move ... hell i could have done that a thousand hours ago!

So you think it would be best to find a king air job, or a shorts or something like that, or go to say Colgan where you are and get some 121 Saab time (or something similar) under me?

I have a friend at Mesa and says they are looking. Do you think biting the bullet and going to the right seat of an RJ with the hopes of upgrading this century would be a bad thing, considering I have 1500 PIC already?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Get on the web sites for the majors they are interested in, look at their requirements in detail. Generally turbine twin time is almost universally specified...they often make an explicit exception for single-engine fighter time, but not for caravans.

Also, there is a trend to require turbine time in aircraft > 20,000#

Mesa jet upgrades are currently about 16 months (east coast).

PIC Time

You mentioned your dream jobs, so go to their website to see what they want in order to be picked up. Some airlines require ME turbine part 121. So keep that in mind. It will affect your overall decision.

You mention that you don't want to go to a regional and I'm not sure what the reason for that is, but if you don't have any 121 experience, sometimes you have to go that route. The majors like to see part 121 time because it helps them to see that you can "get along with passengers" and the like. Yeah, boxes don't complain, but people do, so they want somebody that is a people person.

I keep hearing bad things about the regionals such as low pay, unstable companies, bankruptcy, miserable co-workers, and also that right seat RJ time is useless ... mmm sounds like fun
Now all this i have read here in the forums, so before anyone gets all defensive, im just quoting what i have read, so be gentle!
I, just like others, dont want to make the wrong move and be stuck somewhere that isnt progressive to my career.

That being said .... if i went to a regional to get 121 time as you suggested, would it be better to go to say coex or mesa to fly right seat in the RJ, or someone smaller like colgan and fly right seat 1900 or SAAB?
Anyone you know that upgraded quickly?

I would be interested to hear any suggestions.

I'd choose an airline with the quickest upgrade to Captain. And the best you can do is look at what is currently happening. Rick said Mesa at 16 months, I would say Colgan (with your time) at 12 - 14 months, I've heard others say CHQ at about 2 years. You have to take your best shot. It's the best we all can do.
