Question Any commuters from BDL?

Anybody here commute from BDL? My folks still live in CT and free rent is the best rent on 1st year pay. I'll be commuting into CVG (Comair). Anybody have past experiences/horror stories. Info about parking would also be much appreciated.

I used to commute out of BDL for about 2 months. For the most part getting out of BDL wasnt a problem, as well as getting into BDL. The only delays or cancelations I experienced were all weather related.

I don't know if CVG would be a 1 leg commute, but my commute was a 2 legger, and it absolutley sucked. If I got out of BDL alright, I would be always stressing out in PHL whether I would make the flight, if it would be full because of a previous cancelation or w/e. Also, the Dash-8s were always weight restricted out of PHL so you couldnt get the jumpseat. If the PHL flights looked good, I would be always stressing out about the BDL flights because of weather, or whatever it may have been, missed connections etc.

I hated it so much, and now am going to be based in LGA and have a place down here, pay rent for a room. At first I wasnt going to because of the costs involved and was planning on commuting it but I changed my mind pretty quick. Yea its expensive, but the QOL is a huge improvement and well worth it IMO. You also don't lose a day off for traveling, I just jump in my car and 2 hours later am here if I am comming from home.

Nothing like getting in your car after work and not having to worry about missing a flight, a flight being full, delayed, canceled, etc etc.

Thats my commuting story, and all of my pains were caused by the 2 leg commute. If it was a 1 leg, I would probably still do it, as thats not nearly such a PITA getting somewhere.

I thought about JFK, but I live in the NE corner of CT making it about a 2-3hr drive and with gas, it just seems easier to do a 20 min drive to BDL. If it turns out to be a royal PITA, maybe I could afford a place a little closer to NY and change to JFK.

Stoki what did you do for parking? Where could I get a pass?

I've been commuting from the BDL area to EWR for about 2 years now. The drive is not bad depending on traffic to the NYC area. Flying to EWR is awful, I don't do it due to ATC. Not sure if JFK is any better. As for commuting to other cities from BDL, no major issues. I've been told about $30 per month for employee parking. Hope this helps!

I would suck it up and drive. Look at it this way: you spend $$ on gas and tolls and guarantee that you get home to enjoy your days off or spend $$ on a hotel in CVG cause you can't make it home.

If I were you, I'd suck it up an move to CVG. That's what I did. As much as I hate this hillbilly state, it is nice not having to commute, check-out and sit on my couch in my apartment 30 minutes after block in with a beer in my hand. Plan on being on reserve for a long time, bring down your car and don't deal with the commute. You can get an apartment here for about as much as you would pay for a crashpad with 25 other dudes in NYC. You can always try the commuting thing once you hold a line, but on reserve it sucks! Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. Just something to think about...

I drive most of the time from southern NH, it's about a 4 hour ride. Not the greatest but still being on reserve I'm usually down there for 4-5 days anyway so I only do the round trip maybe once a week, even less now I'm on long call (for the time being anyway). If I have a short time off or only a couple days on then I'll fly to/from BOS, but between getting to and from the airport, getting on a flight etc etc it can take just as long if not longer than driving for me anyway. So point being is having your car at the end of a trip at that mess called JFK with all the cancellations/delays etc is a great thing; not stressing about getting bumped from flights and trying to get home is nice.

I think that's what I'm going to do. I'm looking for a crashpad house here in Florence (Y'all). Got a few leads from the posters in the trailers. If I'm gonna be on reserve for a year plus might as well get a decent place. I'd be fine paying $300ish for a private room here. I probably will only be heading back to BDL a couple times a month to check up on the mail, see the folks, etc. On my off days i plan on trying to go and visit my g/f in SCE. I am still super ****ed that DAL is closing our station there, its one of the reason I wanted to be based in CVG. But who knows as of a few hours ago, I'm back on the furlough chopping block. Its just one giant Charlie Foxtrot now!
