Two questions come to mind:
1. Is voluntary furlough still an option with the company? If so, how does this work? Can I set the dates that I want to leave and come back?
I have a tough time believing that anyone at TSA would be this accommodating. I'd just as soon let someone junior to me keep their job b/c I want to get out for a little while. However, I WILL want to come back after the certification is complete and would like my seniority back.
2. Any ideas (I know its just a guess) how long a furlough would likely last? Maybe it'll last a couple years anyway. That would be very convenient.
Do you expect to be in the next group of furloughs? If so, then just ask to take a leave of absence to start school etc. When furloughed, you would get unemployment benefits. That would be useful as you go back to school and satisfy your unemployment benefits requirements. When an airline starts to furlough, it is open ended. They don't know for how long or how deep, so no point in trying to negotiate. However, get certified and become an airline pilot accountant, etc. They seem to do well with my fellow UPS pilots and if competent, will get alot of business (just like some pilot mortgage brokers (even now doing OK)Originally Posted by bryris
I am expecting to receive a furlough notice from TSA here before long and honestly am welcoming it. I want to go back to school in the spring to finish up a professional certification and need 1.5 to 2 years of time to get it done. Two questions come to mind:

There is some truth to what you are saying. However, it doesn't change market forces. If there were 100 pilots in US, you bet it would pay a gold mine of money b/c the companies would want to attract those guys. However, there is a surplus of pilots out there all trying for a lesser number of positions. Managements are going to decide that if they pay less, they'll still staff the airplanes.Originally Posted by BURflyer
I don't think so. You joined the regionals didn't you, was your intention to drive down the wages? There will always be applicants whether it was a high or low paying job. What's criminal is that the unions haven't been able to rectify this problem. Regionals 25 years ago had same pay and qol if not better than the regionals of today, anything wrong with that?? 1985 pay vs 2008 pay shouldn't be exactly the same. I'm not sure if pilots are to blame for that.
However this assumes no union involvement. The union should make it better, but again its a constant give and take with mgnt, and with the railway act as an anchor to our ability to strike and force our worth, the result is what you see.
I am not a market force/union expert. But I am a thinker....

Thanks for the tip. I am not sure when my time is coming. I think I will survive the next round. The rumor is 10 pilots and last list, I had 46 under me. So its getting closer and closer.Originally Posted by SaltyDog

So it is 10? I have been wondering. If you see my status change to "F'd" you'll know your time is not far away with me being 6 below you Originally Posted by bryris
