Question for you Saab Guys

When the Saab 340 is taxiing I always see it with the right prop in the feathered position while the left prop is out of feather. What's the reason for this? Thanks in advance!

Hmmm..... are you sure it isn't the other way around? If not I guess my only guess is saving fuel.... but again... just a guess.

Either way belliott, I'm just curious why this is done, and trying to find out from a Saab driver...no offense.

It's to run high pressure bleed air for the ACMs. Cools the plane down better. Really works good if you turn both HPS on even if you're not supposed to.

Cooling...leave the right engine in feather run the power lever up higher with the right high pressure bleed on...then single engine taxi with the left :)

Taxiing on one engine is quieter and thus more comfortable for the pax.

Also, for ground ops one would want to run HP bleed air since not much air is coming out of the packs with the low power setting. When you use HP in the Saab on the ground, your supposed to have that prop in feather. The Right pack sends most it's air to the cockpit, thus why right side is usually in feather. It's all about the pilots.

Ah, I just learned something new!!! Thanks rager!!! You out of LAX?

Double HP with props unfeathered, that's the only way to taxi... We call that double trouble! Twice the cooling and twice the trouble if caught.

See ... we Saab drivers don't get an APU ... so we have to make one of the engines run as one ... Which engine we choose to use is usually based on which way we have to turn out of the gate! Sometimes we play a little game of "freeze out" to see who will be the pansy first and have to turn off the recirc fan in the flight deck, lol ... that is, if the HP actually works at all
