Mokulele and WestJet sign code-share agreement.
Calgary, Alberta-based WestJet will be selling interisland packages under a new agreement with isle carrier Mokulele Airlines.
The partnership is intended to give WestJet customers more convenience in connecting to the islands while providing Hawaii residents greater access to WestJet's network of 51 destinations through each other's Web sites. The carriers also are working toward a code-share agreement, according to Bill Boyer, chief executive and president of Big Island-based Mokulele.
"Its' very, very valuable; it basically gives us the connection to Canada," he said. "They're going to sell us to all guests coming to the islands that want to go interisland. We'll be their interisland carrier."
The agreement follows WestJet's announcement last month that the airline was increasing its Hawaii service to 23 flights per week.
Mokulele offers 595 flights a week from Honolulu, Kapalua, Kona, Lanai, Lihue and Molokai and will increase flights in early 2009 when it begins offering service to Kahului on Maui and Hilo on the Big Island.
"Our long-term goal is to be the dominant air carrier to Hawaii from Canada and this arrangement helps us move towards this achievement," said Hugh Dunleavy, WestJet 's executive vice president of commercial distribution.
Mokulele and WestJet are finalizing the contract to promote each other's online. WestJet Vacations, a division of WestJet, also will be selling sightseeing air tours on Mokulele Airlines.
