I think there is a simple confusion going on with the crosswind here. We all know that when the weather reports the wind, it always reports the direction it is coming from. IE 320/20 would be from the WNW, and the actual wind vector is going 140/20. The wind is pushing in the direction of ESE at 20 knots. I have a feeling the confusion with the OP lies in this not-so-subtle subtlety.

There should be no confusion. If the wind is 320 and the runway is 3 I dont see anything confusing at all. However, if you have 500 hours and zero airline experience and you question an airline crew on their decisions:

TADA! Confusion.

How about parking at the gate with the strobes still on? Say something, or no?

Anyways, this guy pops his head up front and the conversation goes like this:

Pax: "After landing checklist next time?"
Me: "What on earth are you talking about?"
Pax: "You didn't put the flaps up!"
Me: "I left them down on purpose, and the checklist says 'as required' and I need them down to check something on the inboard flap!"
Pax: "Oh, sorry."

Being a backseat driver does nothing but irritate the crew and make you look bad, so why do it? If you have a general question about something, ask me. But don't criticize us when you have no experience.

Haven't you heard the story (I think it was here) where a passenger went up to the cockpit after a flight and claimed he was going to report them to the FAA because they were clearly doing more than 250 knots and his altitude sensing watch said they were at 8,000 feet - well below 10,000 feet for more than 250 kts!

The Dash 8-4 is good for 20 knots of tailwind and if it saves us time we will take whatever runway works up to our limitations whether it is a 20 knot tailwind or a 32 knot crosswind.

If I have a commute to make and am coming from the south there is no way I am taking the 20 minute trip around to 22L at EWR when 11 with a tailwind is right there calling my name.

another critic topic that I know all of you jumpseaters get from pax..."was that landing normal?" I never tell the pax other than the crew did a great job under the conditions because its not my place and I am just happy to have a seat in the first place.

Let's pretend we are at Mass and show a sign of peace.

But don't forget my friend, He always believes in you.

Take care everyone, and I'm looking forward to my next A/E flight at the end of the week.:)
