TSA Jumpseast Questions
 

I'm planning to jumpseat on a couple of TSA flights next week BNA-ORD-BNA. I've never flown on TSA before and have a couple of questions.

What is the procedure for listing/checking in?

What is the dress code for jumpseating?

Am I correct in thinking that the ER4 is iffy with regard to taking a full load plus jumpseater?

I'm going to visit a friend who flies for Skywest in ORD and, since these are UX flights, he's checked loads for me.

I used to fly on TSA regularly, most of the time from BNA to STL but also other destinations; however it was usually on the American Connection side (gate C12 most of the time).

I'm not sure about United Express side but my experiences with TSA have been very good, laid back and friendly crews and they usually bend over backwards trying to get you on. I've been on some very full flights and never got bumped!

Checking in - simply go to the gate (will need uniform to the through security) or go to the ticket counter, get listed and they'll give you a bogus ticket so you can get through security...

Also, if you're in uniform, there's a new employee line right next to the CAL ticket counter. Coming on the employee bus take the first door and walk by the CAL ticket counter, then turn right and then make an immediate left (you'll see the "Employee Only" sign).

Dress code? I usually wore some khaki pants and a nice polo short, often I'd come in uniform to get through security faster and changed at Eagle Ops (I still have many friends over there and they'd take me downstairs to their ops).

Now, I assume your flight is on TSA and not Gojet? - I've never flown on Gojet side and hopefully never will (had my company rebook me a few times) as I am boycotting the alter-ego entity but that's a different story... :(

Well there are many options for that route but as far as TSA I saw many full flights with one riding up front so you should be ok on the 145.

one thing to be aware of is that (unless they rewrote their OPS manual after I left) they are only allowed 2 jumpseaters total. and any TSA, Gojet, or UAL mainline pilot has priority over you.

Who do you fly for?

Does he need one of those new UX jumpseat forms?

It's really a crapshoot (and I mean that in the most literal sense) if you get bumped as a jumpseater with a full load. Usually it's not a problem, but, if one of the older 145 EP models is on that route and the weater is bad w/an alternate, it's probably not gonna happen just because of the weight. But there are only about 4 or 5 of those planes floating around, so odds are in your favor. Good luck!

I would be very careful with changing into regular clothes after passing through security in uniform. This is big no-no with TSA and there is some crazy fine associated with it if they catch you.

Doesn't matter what's in the Ops manual because if there's an empty flight, our crews will take a full load of jumpseaters. There's only one jumpseat in the cabin though. It's usually they gate agent who won't let extra jumpseaters down.

Just yesterday we took two eagle pilots jumpseating to work as well as a United guy

Huh? My buddy is a TSA supervisor in BNA (former pilot) and he's never heard you're not supposed to change to civvies? Have been doing it for years now, so far so good...

back on topic. Be careful jumpseating on TSA. God forbid you get smoke in the cabin while "on the ground" and the captain deploys the oxygen masks :)
