That's pretty cool. It's not everyday you see that. I'm proud of them!

pilotgolfer 03-03-2009 12:47 PM

I saw that same story on CNN last friday. Pretty soon, they are gonna let woman vote.

Tiger2Flying 03-03-2009 12:49 PM

All four seem like very nice and modest people. Congrats to them for making history.

This world is getting out of control.

PiperPower 03-03-2009 01:22 PM

The Captain is one of only 10 black women captains in the country... that's a pretty amazing accomplishment for her.

Yeah, I thought that it was nice and responsible journalism on CNN's part for airing such a story. All to often we just get the negative view sometimes of African Americans.

I gotta tip my hat to ASA. Second time that I'm aware of in less than a year that an all African-American crew has operated one their aircraft. I'm sure other airlines have had it happen, but not at the frequency of ASA.

I guess that's one reason why they're at the top of my list to hope to fly for....actualizing the opportunity.

Wait a second, where is the diversity here? I thought everyone was all about "diversity?"

i could be wrong, but i believe diversity is an old, old wooden ship used during the civil war era.

etflies 03-03-2009 01:49 PM

No, I'd be surprised if they were concerned about the lack of an old wooden ship on here...

You're not Ron?

Is that DP?

flynavyj 03-03-2009 02:13 PM

I've seen the full African American crew at Trans States, but they weren't women. Well, one person was, but the other two, were definitely men, manly men, men in tights.

The Juice 03-03-2009 02:32 PM

If I was a black woman I sure as heck would be in aviation. Seems like there is a lot more opportunity out there for someone who is a minority (squared) than the average white male fighting for the same nut.

And for those who think the above statement is racist, get over it!

It's in the article...if you read it;)

ExperimentalAB 03-03-2009 02:47 PM

Did that really make the news? They don't deserve any more congratulations than you or I...I'm going to go pat myself on the back now for being part of an all white-male crew flying into ORD today

For a country that is in bed with equality, we sure the heck make a big deal out of "news" like this...

Well jee then...I totally missed the chapter about white people being segregated in my HighSchool history book....

What was I thinking going to a private school...I learneded nothing!!!

ExperimentalAB 03-03-2009 02:56 PM

Do we still need to be bent out of shape by something that our grandparents did? I'm all about equality...and if they deserve a news story, why don't you or I? Don't misconstrue my words -- you're missing the point!

Humans are tribalistic by nature. We naturally seek others like ourselves. When you walk into a cafeteria, library, or any other place large groups gather you will notice that whites sit with whites, asians with other asians, blacks with black, etc.

But oh my god that is politically wrong! We shouldn't segregate ourselves like that...As a Pilot, it should be punishable by death that I want to seek out other Pilots to chat with.

Come on guys...

FL450 03-03-2009 03:25 PM

Oh this thread is going down the drain quick:(... instead of ranting, how about we just congratulate if you feel it warranted. If not any comments like "how about congrats for an all white crew" will be misconstrued and arguments will be started.

Experimental I'm not picking on you just making a point

todd1200 03-03-2009 03:37 PM

This reminds me of Skinner's speech on the Simpsons:

Principal Skinner [phonily]: Am I wearing women's clothes? I didn't notice. When I look in my closet, I don't see male clothes or female clothes, they're all the same.

Edna Krabappel [arms crossed]: Are you saying that men and women are identical?

Skinner: Oh, no, of course not! Women are unique in every way.

Lindsay Nagel [arms crossed]: Now he's saying women and men aren't equal!

Skinner [getting nervous]: No, no, no! It's the differences...of which there are none, that make the sameness...exceptional! [desperately] Just tell me what to say!

[Skinner hyperventilates and faints]

cargo hopeful 03-03-2009 03:39 PM

I totally agree, I don’t really want the mods to close down this thread, it’s just that threads like this makes me nervous.

forumname 03-03-2009 03:39 PM

I'm probably wrong, and if I am, apologies.

But I don't know if this is the FIRST crew to fall into this gender/race demographic.

I believe it may have happened at a particular B-1900/EMB120 operator YEARS ago, on the B-1900 if I remember correctly. Whether or not that was the FIRST occurrence or not, I don't know.

But I don't think the people behind this article can make the claim.

GOCKY 03-03-2009 03:46 PM

Yeah, but I bet the dispatcher wasn't an African American female. Now that would be a story!
Seriously, this is not news in my opinion. An all white NBA basketball team since the fifties? That would be news.

CaptKrunch 03-03-2009 03:46 PM

Please just shut this one down. No good can come of this.......

TurboDVR42 03-03-2009 03:49 PM

thats kind of cool...

i am just curious how did that made the news???

ehaeckercfi 03-03-2009 04:07 PM

I would rather this be in the news than all the negative articles about regional airlines. I guess pilots always have to complain about something...

Your absolutely right. You should and do have the right to mingle with who you want. Unfortunately, that wasn't always the case for every person in the United States. Parts of our society were forced to only mingle with themselves and didn't have the opportunities that others had.

As to your earlier post, I also don't feel that we should have to pay or be blamed for what not even my parents were involved in (and they are old:D). However, the minorities in our society are just beginning to experience life in a more free, less suppressive society. It is for this reason that I give all my support and congratulations to those that rise above the stereotypes still in our society and prove that all are created equal regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or political beliefs.

Yeah....you're right because every time a thread has any racial overtones, especially if the thread addresses the opportunities that were or were not afforded to minorities, particularly African-Americans, it never ceases to amazes me how quickly some people can become insensitive with their smart*** comments.

I find this quote form the article to be a bit dubious. I personally know three African American ladies who are or who have been captains at UAL and one of them is a standards captain.

Those are just the people I know. That means there are only 7 others in the whole country!

I'm not saying that it isn't correct but it is a shocking number if true!

Why are you proud of them? This is not 1950, women and men both have the opportinuty to learn to fly, regardless of color. I have never seen a sign outside of an FBO that reads "White Males Learn to Fly Here." Anyone who has the money to learn, can.

So these 2 pilots, who happened to be black and female, decided they would like to make a career out of their passion for flying, just like all of us did. And then by random scheduling, they were flying together one day.

Should we applaud male nurses, white rappers, male nannys, white heavyweight boxers as well...they are all rare in their fields?

The fact that people are "proud" of them does not say much on how they feel about these pilots abilities, as if they do not have the "goods" to make it in this field and somehow these two did.

They are pilots, rare, but still just pilots.

STILL GROUNDED 03-03-2009 06:35 PM

I had an all straight flight crew the last two days. That's got be some kinda record, right?

This is exactly how I feel every time I fly... and I quote...

"When I got to the cockpit and I saw (insert "oh my gosh" name) -- we just met a few weeks prior," . "And I was just ecstatic when I saw her in there."

"We did not realize the historic ramifications of it," Buck Rogers said. "We were just like, okay this is gonna be fun."

Yep, this is gonna be fun!!!!! ;)
