Did ASA make a mistake furloughing?

I was checking out sked+ today and there are 13 days where we are below min reserve staffing. This is only March and they are having problems with staffing, the summer season could potentially be a disaster if the block hours increase more.

I highly doubt anyone will be called back, but this is at least looking a little promising for some people to be called back (10-20 maybe?). Has anyone heard anything? I've been really out of the loop since hitting the street.

Has anyone been getting the JM call?

Airline management will never admit to making a mistake, even when it cost the millions!

If this were Compass, management would say you were over staffed! We have not had adequate reserve coverage for Fo's or captains every day since at least the middle of December. That being said... It is crazy how all these companies are penny pinching there staff to save a buck and then losing thousands by canceling flights without crews.

There is still a lot of room to increase line values, but I think we would have been fine without furloughing and keeping the lower line values. Now, come this fall.....

I don't think its the lack of crews at Compass. Its the fact that the 175 is a POS and breaks after every leg. Reminds me of american cars...

No we are still overstaffed. The guys on reserve are flying 40-50 hours a month. If the start flying 90 then we will be understaffed on the FO side. Just under 75 hours a month on reserve is proper staffing levels we aren't even close to this. I don't believe anyone is getting junior manned lately. Those arrows you see on skedplus indicate less reserves then their model, but the truth is they aren't junior manning or asking line holders to pick up time and a half! Ha in fact everyone is snapping up open time like crazy! They could drop 300 more hours into open time and it would be gone by the end of the first open time bid period. ASA wont be overstaffed for some time. I expect ASA wont hire anyone until spring 2010 when and if they find a place for the 20 200's.

There have been several people extended lately and at least four of the recent red arrow days ended up with 0-3 unused reserves at the end of the day. I think it has more to do with scheduling's ineptitude than being understaffed though.

Yea but there's a problem when half the month is below min reserve. It's been this way on the 50 the entire month. It's made it almost impossible for me to swap any trip this month unless it is on the same days. Future Open Time, the way it currently stands, is almost useless. According to one of the Chief Pilots, it's not so much that they're understaffed, as they think they are understaffed. Apparently, the minimum number they are using is completely arbitrary and is twice what the historical number says it should be. I highly suggest you contact your FO rep. I did. If you don't, this nonsense will continue.

Agreed....and stop picking up open time and help some people out
