Whoops! ASA MX Nightmare Grounds Fleet

Sounds like someone over at ASA made a mistake on engine maintenance.

Bucking Bar 03-31-2009 05:26 PM

What? Tell us more.

selcal 03-31-2009 06:09 PM

Something about improper boroscope tracking..........60+ 200's grounded

Trip7 03-31-2009 06:29 PM

Hey guys look up! Guluible is written on the ceiling! Wonder what day is tomorrow?

atlmsl 03-31-2009 06:35 PM

No it's true. Just heard from scheduling. Around 60 200's grounded. Flights have already been canceled. Check your schedules.

Pansk 03-31-2009 06:39 PM

anyone have anything canceled yet? I'm really hoping not to go to work tomorrow.

I'm thinking true since if you check under real time performance it shows around 60 cancels due to 'engine'

atlmsl 03-31-2009 06:43 PM

Yeah, it's an engine records problem. Latest from scheduling is that they are ferrying the affected airplanes around tonight and the problem should be "taken care of" by tonight. Good luck...

dbo861 03-31-2009 06:53 PM

The 5:45am flight DSM-ATL tomorrow was cancelled. I was going to non-rev on that flight.

ExperimentalAB 03-31-2009 07:12 PM

dbo...hope you have a late show!

RAHPilot5 03-31-2009 07:45 PM

thought it was a april fools joke myself. Sucks if it isnt. Hope everything works out.

undflyboy06 03-31-2009 07:52 PM

I hope everything works out for everyone and that nobody is stranded at an outstation.

A similar situation happened at TSA when a AD wasn't properly complied with pertaining to the nosewheel steering. We had crews that were stranded at outstations in the middle of nowhere, and even had some crews leave their overnights and non-rev back to STL. Nothing as huge as 60 aircraft though.

atlmsl 03-31-2009 07:57 PM

From the MEC:

The company has notified the MEC this afternoon that our maintenance leadership has discovered about 68 aircraft that missed mandatory engine inspections recently. As a result, the company has “self disclosed” to the FAA and subsequently grounded the 68 aircraft from service and will be ferrying these aircraft to the ATL hub to undergo these mandatory inspections. Monitor your email for more information from the MEC and the company. In response to this obvious scheduling nightmare, our scheduling committee is working hard with scheduling management to get most, if not all, pilots released as early as possible from their canceled schedules

Like to see a picture of that ramp.

It'll look like Comair's ramp... CRJ museum... I should set up a booth and charge $10/person to 'tour'.

Wonder how much those 2 actions will cost? Especially the "self disclosure"..!

ASA Grounds 60 Aircraft

(WSB Radio) Atlantic Southeast Airlines, a member of the Delta Connections Network, has voluntarily grounded 60 aircraft in its fleet.

ASA spokeswoman Kate Modolo tells WSB's Mark Alewine the airline has pulled the 50 passenger CRJ200 commuter jets from service to conduct safety inspections on the planes' engines. The potential problem was found during an internal audit of the company's maintenence and safety file.

Modolo says the inspections should take between 36 and 48 hours to complete, with most of the work being done at the ASA hangar at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The airline has not determined how many flights or passengers will be affected by the grounding of the aircraft. ASA reservation specialists are contacting customers who are scheduled to fly today or tomorrow and are rebooking them on other flights.

ASA has notified the Federal Aviation Administration about the inspections.

somebody is gonna lose their job......

acl65pilot 04-01-2009 06:26 AM

Well, as I recall DAL won the contract to do all of ASA's engine work last year or the year before. This egg may not be on ASA's face but DAL's. It depends on where the ball was dropped.

I doubt it. ASA has a poor record of holding middle managers accountable for anything.

BANYO4 04-01-2009 07:40 AM

GEAE is going to be busy with CDR's.

DublinFlyer 04-01-2009 07:55 AM

How is the situation now? Have they made progress getting the airplanes back online?

I don't know about that. All I know is there is a very large portion of the ASA maintenance hanger dedicated to engine work full on ASA Techs. You could be right though.

BANYO4 04-01-2009 08:36 AM

DAL only maintains the engines off wing. The airlines MPM for the aircraft type is responsible for the inspections. DAL usually only does the off wing work. On wing is the operator’s responsibility. Maintenance tracking is always a function of the operator unless they have a special agreement with DAL.

Sadly I was about to suggest a trip to CVG too....

rickair7777 04-01-2009 01:30 PM

Went through ATL today...quite the collection of CRJ's parked on the north side. I thought this was an april fools joke last night, guess not.

ExperimentalAB 04-01-2009 01:39 PM

So apparently we sent 5 aircraft and crew from the SkyWest side to help cover the flying for a couple of days...I'm sure we have more airframes and pilots sitting around in SLC than that alone?

Me too. Strangely enough I was delayed taking off twice because a Coyote was running around in front of us.

You guys can have some of Comair's extra planes. We sure aren't using them.

It was pretty funny. I saw that as well, he almost turned into a grease spot several times!

cpatterson19 04-01-2009 06:07 PM

Seems like some crews will be gaining some extra per diem. Hope it wasnt the last day or worst yet the last leg of the day for them. LMAO.....that would suck.

On a more seious note I hope it gets looked after and quick. It will affect not only the opperation but sorry for the commuters who showed up when the flight was empty to find it now over booked or cancelled.

I was supposed to play golf today with a good friend of mine who’s a CR9 ATL lineholding CA. He was tapped to fly a CR2 trip today and is scheduled for a 2 day starting tomorrow, all on the CR2. At least he’s getting $124/hr (150%).

BANYO4 04-01-2009 09:22 PM

I have lots of experience with maintenance on the CF34 if you have to Bore Scope that many engines you are going to find damage. There are going to be some that have damage that is out of limits. CF34's run great for a long time with chunks missing from blades and you never know until you stick a bore scope in the engine and see the damage. I feel for your maintenance department they are going to be real busy and the planning department I am sure is on the hot seat.

cpatterson19 04-01-2009 09:28 PM

Wow Banyo. You talking some serious stuff there. I think I better start looking to restructure my commute. Better to be prepared than get stuck somewhere.

BANYO4 04-01-2009 09:45 PM

I don't have a crystal ball I just know how bullet proof the CF34 is until you look inside.Iit is a great powerplant but you will always find something on a bore scope when the engine has been on wing for a while. There are all kinds of allowances and even deviations that GE will grant after engineering reviews the requests. With that many being checked at once there will be some headachs. No matter what it is going to suck for MX.

atlmsl 04-02-2009 05:42 AM

Apparently inspections are nearing completion and ASA should be operating full schedule by this afternoon.

Sounds like a lot of reserves got SADs for out of position...

"4.2.09 - Voluntary Reinspections near completion
Thanks to the hard work, dedication and professionalism of ASA's Maintenance teams, ASA's voluntary reinspection has been successful and we're on track to resume full operations with a normal flight schedule by mid-day today. The voluntary reinspection of 55 percent of our CRJ200 fleet has led to customer-impacting cancellations totalling 272 flights over a 42-hour period that will end today. Our partners at Delta worked on ASA's behalf to contact impacted customers and the majority were reaccomodated on other flights within a matter of hours."

FlyASA 04-02-2009 05:14 PM

I hope the moron(s) responsible for this are fired immediately. I also hope that this doesn't cost us block hours or aircraft.

atlmsl 04-02-2009 09:02 PM

I'm guessing this goes against our numbers for April... making it two months in a row not meeting goals. Super
