What is interesting to me is how indiscriminatly we are expected to tip these days. I see "tip buckets" popping up in odd places.. the dunkin doughnuts counter, the dry cleaner, I even saw a gas money jar for staff in a local bookstore.
What amazes me is there are situations where you are forced to tip despite the service, and others where service was excellent and there is not an opportunity, or there is a company policy against it (like the grocery store where i bagged as a boy) I do not try to base my tip based on what i think the person is making. I have tipped well to a bartender who makes $700 a night, but dammit the guy was awesome and the service phenominal. I was alone with a van driver one day going to JFK, young guy fresh off the boat, loving life for his opportunity to be here, his attitude was infectious and his professionalism showed. He got $5 from me. I will not, however, subsidize lackluster service by feeling obligated to tip a percentage regardless of the result. Rudeness, apathy, incompetence and unprofessionalism will not be rewarded, no matter how small the expected tip. USMCFLYR |

Where I worked the maids were paid much more than the drivers. Maybe things have changed in the years since - but drivers were expected to get tipped, therefore they paid us much less.
USMCFLYR Imagine if someone did happen to tip you as they walked off the plane, would it be ok for the company to deduct some amount from your check because of that tip? If it kept happening would it be ok for the next CBA to lower your salary because its just easier to take it out of your base salary initially than to deduct it from every flight. I dont think so. So why can a the hotel (and restaurants for that matter) do it? Its a premeditated paycheck dedution because they were tipped. Again, its not my job to pay their wages, thats why I pay the hotel (and the resturant) |

That I can't help you with. In the years that I have been aware of such things - there has been this system that some jobs worked on the expectation of tips. How it started I don't know. Why do drivers work for less than minimum wage and get tips - I don't know. Why do waitresses/waiters do the same - I don't know. It doesnt really matter. You either tip or you don't. I will never do something just because society deems it so. If someone deserves a tip, you will know this. While this person is working you will think about the job this person is doing, how and if they are going above what you expect.
I have no problem giving a buck or two when a driver makes the extra effort. But I will never pony up my cash just because it is expected for me to do so. |
I don't anymore...just have to pass on the pay-cuts, unfortunately

A lot of the drivers are the janitors or maids. We do them a favor by getting out of the hotel for a while. What else do they want?

When I make more than the van driver then I will tip no problem.
