Default Load Factor ???

Ok, I have been reading alot about how airlines are setting record "load factors" and are still losing money. Sounds like they are giving away the seats just to put bodies in them...but that is for another day.

My question is do non-revs count in the published load factor or is it purely revenue passengers that are counted. Also are these numbers different if it is a high OSO day where multiple flights are canceled thus reducing the number of empty seats and filling all the seats that were not sold at the start of the day.

On a side note one day last week when DFW was having alot of bad weather and many flights were canceled I saw a ORD - DFW flight with over 230 non-rev standbys listed...who in there right mind looks at this flight and sees a list this long and says "hmm maybe I'll get lucky"!!

Load factor = Revenue Passenger Miles (RPM) / Available Seat Miles (ASM)

Yea what he said.

When non-revs fly they don't count.

When flights are canceled it's only the seats that fly that count.
