Citation vs Dash 8 CLT

>>Here is a funny little story that happened to me at CLT. We are holding short of E2 on E near the approach end of RW 36C waiting for departure. There are 2 ways to access the runway, continue on E or E2. There is an Airbus holding short on E and E2 is free. We are holding short of E2 because we have not been instructed which taxiway we will use to enter the runway. Tower tells a regional behind us to hold short of 36C on E2. The regional acknowledges the instructions then asks the tower if he would ask the "Slowtation" to pull ahead so they can have access. Of course the controller asks us to move forward. I respond "sure, but I wouldn't call Mach .92 slow"! After a few seconds pause the other pilot replies in a little "I just upgraded to Captain voice " 250 below 10". I know it was the Captain who responded because further transmissions from this aircraft was a female/different voice. At this point I decide not to dignify his response and drop the banter. As we continue on E and are now holding short of 36C, I am able to look over to my right and see who was calling us slow. It was a DASH 8!! Are you kidding me??? We operate Citation X's. First off I would like to say that his initial comment was unprofessional and if your going to attempt to insult another aircraft, you should definitely be flying something more sophisticated and faster.<<

The other day, the copilot I was flying with told me he had read a thread on this forum about a Citation vs Dash 8 event in CLT. Imagine my surprise when I told him of my recent encounter in CLT. It was the same one. I was the DHC-8 Captian in question. Today, I signed up with Airline Pilot Central in part, to shed some light on what happened.

Everything is true, except for the fact that even though the Citation heard the CLT tower clear my aircraft to taxi to and hold short of 36C on E2, the Citation, (who was not holding short of E2, but was in the middle of the intersection), just sat there, blocking my access to the runway. After at least a minute, I did suggest that the Slowtation move up so that I could access the runway. From my perspective, and the fact that the Citation captain has acknowledged he heard my clearance, he was just being the stereotypical small jet driver who though his being in the way would get him in the air quicker. The "professional" thing to do would have been for the Citation captain to put two and two together, and by the process of elimination and in consideration of the fact that the tower controller was probably not blind, taxi forward and give me access. The 250kt comment was made by another aircraft. And yes, my F/O was female. As for the "I just upgraded to Captain voice", for the record I've been flying for 28 years and am 50 years old. I do not sound like a new guy. In the future, please excercise some courtesy and move out of the way. It's not all about you. PS: If you can handle an X-Box, you can press buttons.

I feel sorry for you that you were so offended by some guy saying something on a forum that you felt it you had to sign up just to get your zing in.
Secondly Why are dash drivers SO cought up in what other people think about why they fly? You you fly a trash8 I fly a barbiejet he flies a e-180 everybody has a stupid name for their jet get over it and have a laugh.

jaflapilot 10-04-2009 06:41 AM

Wow dude, you spent all that time writing that narrative and getting all upset over some little quip on the radio? Seriously? Don't be so sensitive. Besides....

Why didn't the Navy buy Citations for their VIP transports?????

Because they can't catch aircraft carriers!!! LOLOLOL:D

CaptainCarl 10-04-2009 06:44 AM

Whatever...

elcid88 10-04-2009 06:47 AM

Both of you seem unprofessional to me. Get over it.

Nicely done survivor! I for one believe you had every right to come to APC and post... the last four people obviously didn't read the original post from the citation driver.... In that thread I told him it wasn't necessary to even post this incident on APC... I was the only one who thought that, these other four were noticably silent. I didn't think the original incident deserved posting however if you hear about it from your FO I think you have every right to bring it up again.

CaptainCarl 10-04-2009 07:02 AM

Nevermind...

At least someone got the picture.

Read the post. The complaint was about a "Slowtation" comment, not the Dash.

LostInPA 10-04-2009 07:25 AM

Survivor, welcome to APC.....and glad to hear your side of the story. Some people take themselves far too seriously. Myself, I'm more worried about my DH8's 8 MEL'ed items, or my commute home, etc.. rather than some random radio comment.

JetPipeOverht 10-04-2009 07:26 AM

You felt that you didn't need to stoop to his level....but the need to retire to your computer and write this up.

Me too. I refer to the Dash as a "Dump truck with wings." It's been very good to me.

I read the original post and I thought it was just as useless as the responce. If I got on apc and complained about every Jack hole thing I see and hear at work I would have time to go to work! The second part of my post was just a question I have been pondering lately. I have noticed it seems dash guys are more protective of the plane they fly then other guys.

Was this thread posted, then deleted before?

I know I've commented on a thread *identical* to this one in the last couple weeks...

Bottom line - pilots in every segment of the industry flying all kinds of airplanes say stupid things on the radio. As a fellow Citation pilot, let this stupid crap go...

Yea I remember this thread from a few weeks ago with the identical original post. Apparently he really doesn't like being called a slowtation

If it makes you feel any better, "back in the day," I was a Shorts 3-30 Captain at the FIRST "Piedmont Regional Airline." Anyone who remembers the Shorts knows three things:

1. They're ugly
2. They're slow
3. They're ugly...oops, said that
4. The PT6's left a LOT of soot on the vertical stabs

So...there we are one day, me and my F/O, taxiing out of the BWI ramp, behind another "pig." Piedmont calls for taxi in a very professional voice, hoping to beat us out to Rwy 28.

The ground controllers response? "Roger, follow the dirty pair of Shorts to 28."

Sometimes ya can't win.........

There was a similar situation in an "island city" during the feeder bands of a hurricane.

Unnamed Airline (which you all can figure out) cancelled their jet flights and brought in the Dash 8's to operate, something about tail wind component, landing on a dime, and better overall in crappy weather.

Another airline, we'll call BabyWidget, had a plane stuck at the airport until the winds were going in a good direction to take off (we had 90 degree crosswinds for a bit). Note: Every other airline had already cancelled their flights, and we were technically the last departure.

We had our ops radio tuned to the tower, and there was some banter between the "Trash 8 driver" (yes, this was said) and those in the BabyWidget jungle jet... the BW drivers were getting cocky about the Dash 8 "omg, haven't seen one of those in ages, didn't realize they were still airworthy" - DH8 captain fired back "yeah, those new jets are pretty, but I have seen you sitting here while we've taken off and landed 3 times today.."

The BW drivers just wouldn't leave it alone and made a comment about their jet's powerful engines, so when the Dash 8 was cleared to take off, it appeared to be a full engine run up with breaks on, breaks released and it was airborne by the 1st takeway turn off - which was about 1200 feet.

Right after Tower told them to contact the Departure, tower even chimed in , laughing "now that's what I call a takeoff".

Jungle Jet had to sit for another 25 minutes as the winds exceeded their crosswind tables :)

I would have gone with Panda, but Pappasitos is very good airport food.

I was on the fence and couldn't make up my mind between the 2. The Bistro (I think?) with the Bourbon chicken is pretty good also, but I usually have not so good results with that also.

The new place in C had awesome stuff, but you need to take out a second mortgage to be able to afford it.

Got a pizza, drink, and a banana, $14, ouch.

The Pappadeaux lunch buffet is a good deal, 2 meals for about $10 plus it is fresh. The Bourbon chicken is good but their rice sucks.

And if all else fails, there is always the Galley

Yeah, no wonder Blackwater uses them in Afghanistan.

= No other T-prop can do that! That's why dash driver doods have pride. Dash performance is greatest amongst the t-propers. It can do what no other plane, other than a high performance military transport can.

The buffet there is tasty. I've heard they used to give employees a discount as well. It creeps me out though because its always crowded and gets me claustrophobic trying enjoy all that fried food.

The galley is too. Fried spicy chicken sandwich is tasty.

(The following pointless point is in response to your pointless point)

So what? I've had to slow down in a piston twin to follow a 757.....doesn't mean the 757 is slow. It means that a piston twin (or a Caravan) can maintain a higher speed on final because they can configure and slow down much later. A jet needs to be stabilized much earlier. You'll see when you get a jet job. So, stop posting just for the illusion of contributing unless you actually know what you're talking about.

(my intended tone is meant to be informative, I'm sure you're a fine aviator)

SpiraMirabilis 10-05-2009 11:07 AM

All these "jet jobs" seem to involve a pay cut so I'll stick it out where I am for now.

Discount still in full effect. I know what you mean about the crowds, especially when you are in uniform (people stare at pilots for some reason). Plus eating gumbo in a white shirt is risky!

Joachim 10-05-2009 01:25 PM

People, People...

Everyone knows that the ERJ135 is the awsomest aircraft EVAR! Beware of the wake of awsomeness and keep your distance. Look out for the comic book style expressions that follow it everywhere. When we lower the gear a "CLUNK" written in black and yellow lighting font is suspended in the air for about 30 seconds. It's true!

travelnate 10-05-2009 02:05 PM

what's funny is BabyWidget was an ERJ 135 :P

I remember the Dash 8 captain asking BW how many folks he had to bump.

It is? Cool, I thought I heard from some silverbacks that it used to be like $8 for the boo-fay.
