It was legal, but in my opinion, wrong to operate that flight as revenue. I didn't want to go either way, but I wanted to go even less with 50 people in back.

Don't back down if you are right and don't subject yourself to poor judgement on the part of a captain. The FO has just as much authority in a situation like that. Your opinion counts.

If something is not right...it is not right. It is the pilots' decision, not the pilot's decision to take the airplane.

Leave out the A/P excuse and I would agree

I know several people who used to have to hand fly a Lear at 410 from the midwest to the west coast.

It wasn't that the AP didn't WORK ! That was a spurious argument !! As was the time of day, or whether he felt ok. If he didn't his response ws he was "fatigued". The real question was, whether he *could* land cat1 or 2 upon destination arrival because cat3 can't be flown without the autopilot and autothrottle operating. The answer is NOT whether you CAN
But whether you SHOULD! Too many times CAPT's make the right decision and base it on the WRONG reasonings. And THAT puts them right in the bullseye of Management, because the MEL is a "LEGAL" document as well as an operational document.
