I've done coast-to-coast commuting...it was doable in the short term while waiting for more seniority and a better domicile, but not sustainable in the long run.

I have good luck with commutting shorter distances (yes on reserve too). Here's how:

1) Max 2 hour (maybe 3 hour) leg.
2) Single leg, no connections.
3) Multiple non-stop flights available daily.
4) At least two airlines with non-stops (company and SWA usually works).
5) CASS
6) Leave yourself a back-up flight or two.

I leave 4-6 hours prior to show time and almost never have travel problems, maybe get stuck once every two years due to Wx.
