No nerves. I just enjoyed your post is all. I especially like the passionately written ones best.

I would also add that it's a lot more fun flying yourself around then someone else. The cert. you can work on at night and on weekends. By the way, it's great sleeping in my own bed everynight. Good luck and enjoy.

Thanks...I've got a CCNA. Taking a break since I'll be at the Pentagon for the next 3 years. I won't have much time to take classes work should keep me busy...<grin>

I do plan on completing my CCIE in the future. My next academic goal is a MBA.

9E-TeaBagsCops, so whats your plan now?

[QUOTE=AKfreighter]And as for the BS retirement boom thing. So there's going to be like 12,000 pilots retiring by 2013. Yeah, so what. Interesting statistic. One of mine is that people who make stastics are as accurate at predicting the future as a gypsy with a crystal ball. QUOTE]

It's not predicting the future. Airline pilots have to retire at 60 (at least for now). Airlines have pilot senoirity lists with dates of birth. You can figure out how many will retire by a certain date. No crystal balls needed. I don't know about other airlines, but at mine 1/2 the pilots retire in the next 8-10 years. Everyone on property now will be a Captian. New hires right now can hold the junior CA position in 4 years. Sounds good to me. I'm 500 numbers from CA.

AKfreighter 07-25-2006 02:38 PM

Otto,

Right on man. Glad to hear the upgrade is imminent. Yeah, its not magic. I guess I went off a little because the stat is used to lure unsuspecting pilot wannabes into pilot mills. Anyway, yeah, there's always people retiring. That's why it doesn't mean much. People are retiring now, just like they will in the future. But hiring isn't going gangbusters now, and the age 60 rule could possibly change.

rickair7777 07-25-2006 02:56 PM

Otto is correct...there is some light at the end of the tunnel due to impending retirements at several of the majors. Legacy US Airways average pilot age is 55...

swaayze 07-26-2006 09:48 AM

Yes but.......age 65 is coming. My guess is by year end 2007.

US Airways and Republic Airways Holdings Expand Partnership
Regional Partner Adds 30 New Embraer 175s to Replace Existing Embraer 145s
TEMPE, Ariz., July 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- US Airways (NYSE: LCC) and regional airline partner Republic Airways Holdings (Nasdaq: RJET) today announced they are amending their existing partnership and adding 30, 86-seat Embraer 175 aircraft to the US Airways Express network. The new Embraer 175s will replace 20 existing 50-seat Embraer 145s operated for US Airways Express by Republic Airways Holdings' Chautauqua Airlines subsidiary. The remaining 10 deliveries can replace other retiring aircraft or be used for limited growth in 2008.

The aircraft will operate in a single coach-class configuration and will enter service beginning in 2007 at a delivery rate of one-to-two planes a month through the summer of 2008. The new aircraft join Republic's existing fleet of 28, 72-seat Embraer 170s already being operated under the US Airways Express banner.

US Airways Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Scott Kirby said, "Both Republic and Embraer offer an exceptional product and we're pleased to expand our current partnership with both companies. The comfort of the Embraer 175 aircraft is important to our customers and the economics of the aircraft make good business sense."

"We are very pleased to expand our relationship with US Airways with the addition of these 30, Embraer 175 regional jets," said Bryan Bedford, Chairman, president and chief executive officer of Republic Airways Holdings. "Our company has an excellent tradition of delivering safe, reliable and cost effective service to our customers and airline partners. We are especially excited to introduce the new 86-seat Embraer 175 regional aircraft to the US marketplace. The Embraer E-Jet family continues to set high standards for airline service in North America. Passengers love this aircraft for its spacious interior design and in particular the absence of a middle seat."

Between the commuting (how can we be broke if every single flight is full ?) and the Schmucks they have in managemnet at pinnacle I am done. Please don't take this the wrong way, I was at Pinnacle for 3 years and liked some of the people that I worked with, but I would not send my worst enemy to work there. If you are considering being a slave for Pinnacle PLEASE reassess your options.

Bla bla bla.. This is complete BuLL-$hit. It's nothing but complaints and it's as if you were expecting something better. This has nothing to do with the fact that people are trying to screw you, it's just that you have lost interest in flying. Don't blame Pinnacle or the aviation industry for your reason of quitting. And how the hell do you go from flying corporate to regional? You could have at least tried fractionals.

I doubt there will be that many takers. I would guess the average retirement age would go up to 61 or 62 in the near term.

swaayze 07-26-2006 06:48 PM

I suspect not many really want to keep flying, but thanks to the last few years of stock market doldrums and pension cancellations I think you'll be surprised how many keep at it.

Statistically, your ability to hold a class I medical starts to drop off steeply at age 55. Many folks won't even have the choice, ESPECIALLY if the FAA institutes higher certification standards. BTW, be prepared for those higher standards to be applied to pilots under the age of 60 too.

Actually, my real reservation about increasing the retirement age is that management will want to "normalize" pilot compensation to an assumed age 65 retirement. That means reducing your hourly pay on the assumption that you will make it up by working longer. This is going to really screw that large percentage of pilots who cannot meet the medical standards or are just too worn out too keep at it all the way to 65.

That's funny. There are more than a few Docs out there that will give you a passing grade if you pass "his" examination.;)

I know of two. Not that I needed either.....seriously.
