There is a reason people commute.
It was also called the Military.which is why many folks got out!

But they at least paid for the moves

I should have gone Military. Proabably would have had more fun in the process. As well as get all the moves paid.

Your airlines don't pay for forced moves?

Default Half the Work, All the Pay

The Nav will pay for your PCS but if you have to move on your own It's a UHaul and a couple of TED's looking for a few extra duckets. I'm single so why do I have so much crap! Factor in detachments and deployments and now you are paying for a storage room with carpet, A/C, and running water. You could sublet with enough lead time though...I think the axiom still applies, the higher the aircraft's cool factor, the crappier the duty station, but what do I know I've gone from SanDog to Honolulu!

Why not just rent an apartment where you are based instead of the headache of commuting or having to bunk with 10 other people? Even in the crappiest of cities, there has to be some part of it that is OK to live in.

Are you AT ALL familiar with that airlines (especially regionals) pay these days? Rent/utilities for an apartment you only use a few times a month plus rent or a mortgage at your actual home is far more than most of us can reasonably afford.

To top it off, in the first 5 years of regional flying, I was in 6 different bases. Only ONE of those I WANTED to go to. The other were due to new hire assingment, base closure, downgrade, displacment, and furlough. I know commuting blows, but does anybody really want to pick up their crap and move every 10 months? I didn't then, still don't want to. Especially to some place that is less than desireable to live in. LGA, BOS, EWR, IAD, as examples.

Besides, I'd rather own my residence and build equity for my own financial planning than costantly be moving and paying WAY to much in rent all the time.
