I used to work at Colgan a couple years ago and now that I'm considering going back to the regionals, I can't find my original ATP written results. Does anybody know if Colgan hangs on to this when you get hired on?... Still have to check at my parents house but I'd rather get a head start on this if they have it....

 

The Feds can send you one. If it's been more than two years ago since you took it, a new airline might not consider it for interview purposes.

The ATP written won't expire while employed at an FAR Part 121 carrier, however since
this has occurred you will need to take it again.

 

They do keep your test results. They put it in a file cabinet next to your self respect and your dreams of financial freedom. You get all of them back when you quit.

please reference the regs before you lead people the wrong direction. You can have never have worked for a 121 operation and get hired there with an ATP written you took 5 years ago. You can use that expired written to take the ATP ride. 61.39 says so

(a) Except as provided in paragraphs (b) and (c) of this section, to be eligible for a practical test for a certificate or rating issued under this part, an applicant must:
(1) Pass the required knowledge test within the 24-calendar-month period preceding the month the applicant completes the practical test, if a knowledge test is required;
(2) Present the knowledge test report at the time of application for the practical test, if a knowledge test is required;



(b) Notwithstanding the provisions of paragraphs (a)(1) and (2) of this section, an applicant for an airline transport pilot certificate or an additional rating to an airline transport certificate may take the practical test for that certificate or rating with an expired knowledge test report, provided that the applicant:
(1) Is employed as a flight crewmember by a certificate holder under part 121, 125, or 135 of this chapter at the time of the practical test and has satisfactorily accomplished that operator's approved--
(i) Pilot in command aircraft qualification training program that is appropriate to the certificate and rating sought; and
(ii) Qualification training requirements appropriate to the certificate and rating sought; or

 

Correct me if I am wrong, but (b) (1) says that you would have to be EMPLOYED under part 121, 125, or 135 AT THE TIME of the practical test if you are using an expired ATP written exam.

So yes, you don't have to be employed by an airline, but you have to be employed by a carrier under 121, 125, or 135 at the time you take the test. If you are flying as a flight instructor with a an ATP written exam that is 3 or 4 years old under part 91, you CANNOT use it to take the ATP practical exam.

To be clear, you can get hired at an airline without an ATP written. That is just something airlines throw in there so there is no hang up if they had to upgrade someone rather quickly. So long as you successfully go through the airline, or part 135 carriers recurrent training programs, the expired written exam can be used to take the practical test.
