What to expect at Pinnacle training?

I start class Monday, just wanted to know how training is?

Al Czervik 03-10-2011 02:18 PM

You'll be fine. Study limitations, systems, memory items, THEN flows and profiles. Get a group from class together and study at night. Don't kill yourself hitting the books. Take time to relax. I think its 1 week of indoc, 3-4 weeks systems, 2-3 weeks sim, 1-2 weeks OE (line training). Its been a while, the guys that have been through more recently could tell you more. Congrats!

cosmosdrvr 03-10-2011 03:13 PM

Q drivers. Dave Clarks or Telex?

Sounds like what it was like 5 years ago.

Get as much time in the GFS machine as possible before you hit the sim. Those things are really helpful

1 week indoc, 1 week general operating subjects, 2 weeks systems, 1 week GFS, and the sims. Study limitations, and immediate action items first.

I think your class is getting LR as the instructor. She's pretty good. Be ready for a ton of info in a short timeframe. Study your butt off, but have fun!!

Telex, it is more quiet up front than the ERJ so clamps would be overkill.

What's the best site to find out what flights are available for commuting or just traveling in general?

clipperskipper 03-11-2011 06:07 AM

Kayak, and Orbitz seem to work well.

If things haven't changed much, be ready to hear "That's a Captain question" and "You'll learn that on the line. You don't have to worry about it yet." as the 2 top answers to a lot of questions. I've heard good things about LR as an instructor, so we're at least moving in the right direction. When I showed up to ground school it took them over an hour just to figure out who was going to be teaching our class. This was 5 years ago, though.

Deice Press 03-11-2011 06:24 AM

This is down the road a bit but my sim partner and I studied an hour before and an hour after ever sim session then went out or played video games and watched movies the rest of the time. The instructors said we were one of the best groups (we were both CFI's). Alot of other groups were running profiles and flows for hours and hours every day and still had trouble. The tendency is to overdo it and while it's certainly better than not taking it seriously there is a middle ground in there somewhere. Just my observation.

Systems is cake as long as you pay even a little attention. They want you to pass if you have a class date and will set you up to do so.

All I gotta say is the cec is S.N.A.F.U. Always had been, always will be.

whoareyou310 03-11-2011 06:46 AM

what hotel they put you in for training?? anything near by? Grocery store?? do you need a car?? thanks

usmc-sgt 03-11-2011 08:03 AM

I forgot to mention the one thing you can expect during training which is as sure as the sun coming up....

Subway and lots of it. You can expect to eat subway every day for lunch.

clipperskipper 03-11-2011 08:16 AM

Hotel is the Crowne Plaza on N. Second St. There is a bus stop across the street, according to mapquest.

Colgan is in the Crown Plaza. Pinnacle is in the Memphis International hotel which used to be a holiday inn.

I believe you are now in the Fairfield in O.B.

higney85 03-11-2011 10:05 AM

NH ground school is now at the Crowne for GROUND for all pilots at Colgan and/or Pinnacle. That was a change as of last week. The company is still in "limbo" with some crews using the courtyard across the street for upgrade and the fairfield/mem airport hotel for recurrents. At the sim building yesterday I saw both vans at once- both crews were DTW crews doing their 6 month training events. In the end game you will either be in the crowne (ground/long term training) or the fairfield (recurrent, recurrent SIM, MEM overnight).

At least that's what I know as of yesterday afternoon.

jmartin 03-11-2011 10:53 AM

Is dtw or JFK a better place to live?

This. Work hard, play hard... pass with no problem.

I'd commute to either, but that's just me. :)

DTW would probably be cheaper. As far as safety, who knows? Probably about the same.

passrider.com

Also, for every airline's training: never be that guy in class that starts every sentence/ question with "at my previous airline we did xxxxx....". Don't ever bring any attitude into the building, don't make comments during class that you think are funny, just be quiet and deal with boredom. If you meet someone in the chief pilot's office a year from now and they have never heard your name you are doing things right.
If someone with a higher pay scale than you gives you a hard time in training, remember: Cooperate---> Graduate.

flysooner9 03-11-2011 07:34 PM

do they run sim sessions all through the night?

I lived in the west suburbs of DTW for 3 years... nice area to live! (seriously).

Well I know that the class that started on Feb 28th is in the Memphis international hotel. I'm in that class and that is where I am sitting right now.

Good job, and welcome aboard,

But man the holiday INN Select hotel is so booty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have stayed in much worse, but also a lot better....

Watch for a 35% to 70% failure rate.

Don't quit your day job just take a leave to see if you make it.

Where are you getting this from?

stbloc 03-13-2011 09:34 AM

How does that statement carry any weight? 35%-70% is a large range. which is it? Obviously you are speaking out of your own negative experience. So we ask again, what is the real number of failures?

gojo 03-13-2011 09:48 AM

Pretty good for his first post huh?

Totally untrue. This is some feeling of inadequacy on your part huh? You have some trouble in training?

This is no secret. Some months, there are lots of failures, other months there are not as many. It's time people started taking things seriously and show up to give it your 150%. That's not asking that much, just do your job, stay within 10 degrees of heading, 50 feet of altitude, 5 knots of airspeed, don't miss radio calls, make all of your required call outs exactly when you are suppose to. How hard is that?

There are too many pilots who feel they are "owed" an easy checkride. Know all of your manuals backwards and forwards and you will pass. Aim for perfection.
