What's better?
Right now I have a two leg commute and I'm on reserve. So I have to choose when the next domicile bid comes out.
Option 1: A one leg commute and stay on reserve (plenty of crashpad options). Option 2: A two leg commute but I'll hold a line. Which would you prefer? |
I am sure others will disagree, but I would hold a line, even with a two leg commute.

Line!! Reserve is horrible.
Did you fly A-10s for ID ANG? |

depends on how hard that two leg commute is and how commutable the lines are..... but everything else equal...... take the base where you can hold a line

2 leg line

Such choices for 25K a year...

If reserve is not too long for the one leg commute i would opt for that choice or take the two leg commute with a line and when you can hold a line at the other (one leg commute) base i would put a bid in to transfer if it`s possible.

I would prefer to live in base. Okay, that seems to not be an option for you, so...
The two leg commute.... Are there many flights on each leg? If so, commuting might not be too bad. What KIND of line would you hold? Is it all day trips so you still need a crash pad, or is is late show day one and early off day four so you do not need a crashpad and you actually get all your days off? One leg commute.... How often do they use reserves? What kind of trips? Can you volunteer for longer trips? If they use you for four day trips a bunch, you might be able to avoid a crash pad and get a hotel room one day per string. Speaking for myself, I like having a known schedule. So, a line, no matter how bad, is better. What you like, well, only you can say. Honestly, if you can position yourself to live in base, that is the best solution. |
I'd take the line. You'll probably end up with more days off, so if you have to come in early or miss the last flight it won't be so bad. Also, your line probably will be over guarantee with summer approaching so you'll make more money.

Bid the base you want to be at. Chasing a line is absolutely stupid. Flying changes, lines swap from base to base, others senior to you do this exact thing and chase flying.... Go where you've wanted to be based and stick it out And pay your dues.... Especially as an fo!!!!! As a captain I'd say bid every base to upgrade and then bid to where you want to be.

Two leg commutes SUCK, even to hold a line....been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
|
Answer D... wait, no that can't be right - erase
Answer B... wait, no the doesn't look right either - erase (casually looks around the room) Teachers not looking, guy next to me has H circled... YEA! That's got to be it!! Good luck in your own life choices. Cheers |
Not every line is better than reserve. If it's day trips or standups(CDO or high speeds, whatever you call em) than you will still need a crashpad. standups will fatigue the heck out of you and make your days off seem like one big nap. So why not have a shorter commute with regular reserve and work on your tan this summer?

I know your pain...I could hold a line in June at my current base, but made the decision a while ago to transfer to the base I want to be in because it is a one leg commute.
For me, the extra month of reserve (I hold a line in July at the new base) is most likely going to be worth it. The last three weeks that I commuted to work they canceled at least one flight on my second leg. On the best day it took me 7 hours to get here...yuck! I'll take the nine direct flights from home to the new base. |
I would go for the line!

two leg commute and use fedex and ups. Do you have a commuter or call in honest policy?
