Generally speaking, why are SAAB pilots paid so much less than ATR and DASH pilots?

Pay has been backwards for awhile in this industry. Complexity/risk level of the flying you do, has less affect on pay than the uninitiated would think. If there was some direct relationship between 'toughness' and pay, I would think turboprop 121 pilots, CFIs, and 135 pilots would *generally* be paid much more!w

All prop guys are bottom feeders sucking up the scraps real pilots throw away. Saab guys are just the slimiest ones in the group.
Until this year (fourth year CA pay), I always made more flying 135 (C421s and C208s). Fancy that, they actually valued those of us for our skills. |

He is a Saab Captain. Colgan Saab pilots cant use an FMS...because they dont have one.

Yeah the $14k-ish/year pay that they pay at some places like Great Lakes and Gulfstream for flying T-props seems a bit low for a commercial pilot flying anything, imo.

That is awesome....that is the thing about 135 operators...some are use and abuse employers, while some actually try to keep pilots around and happy. Such a wide variety. The 135 work is almost always challenging in its own way...
I flew for one bad place and three pretty good places. It only took me one bad job to figure out what to look for. The REALLY sad thing is the one bad job I had still paid 20 percent more than industry average regional FO pay.... and the work rules were decent. Ohhhh, but I forgot..... I wasn't flying a Jet! Strange how an 8500 lbs, single engine, freight hauler pays better than a 70 pax FO. |
Because ATR is a bigger plane. With an ATR type you are typed for 42 and 72. 42 typically holds 46 seats (up to 50 depending of the config). So being paid more to fly a bigger plane makes sense to me.

It doesn't help that Gulfstream is getting SAABs and are being flown by pilots who don't depend on the salary and are happy making peanuts while playing airline pilots!

The SAAB pilots flying ??+ seat aircraft are operating part 121. Yes, they may be happy flying for a B.S. wage. However, they do happen to be "Airline Pilots" flying for a 121 outfit.:)
Adios Unfortunately, they are folks who are willing to work for a third less than what we make. Sad to think their CAs make the same that I was making flying a C208 hauling boxes. |
