17.5 neck on my dress shirts with an athletic build. Just got the shirt from A Cut Above; the neck fits just fine but I can't get the main part of the shirt to button across my shoulders/chest. It's the tapered version. Looks like even with the large neck size it assumes a very slender build up top - not talking about the gut, rather increased upper body size from weightlifting. Going to try an 18.5 and see if I can get it altered (which is a full size above what I normally wear). Other than that I like the shirt.

Just wanted to toss an alternative view out there in case future readers come across this thread and are looking for shirt "reviews". I'm mainline UAL and was not 100% pleased with the standard issue shirts and really wanted something "tapered" so I tried the A Cut Above shirts.

Personally I did not care for them.

1) Weird padding on the neck that just bugged me.
2) 1 velcro breast pocket and 1 fake pocket? Yuck.
3) Super heavy weight. I prefer light weight material.

Tapering for a slim guy was good, but the negatives out weigh the positives for me.

This is NOT putting down anyone elses preference. It's just an alternative view.

Not to pile on the above the A Cut Above discussion, but I'm an average guy 5'11" and 170lbs and the A Cut Above shirts fit really strangely. I couldn't find a shirt that me correctly. If the neck fit, the rest was like a tent. The long-sleeve shirt sizes they carry are bizarre....

Not trying to hijack the thread, but apparently I work for the only airline that doesn't wear wings on our shirts and ordered 2 SS shirts with the eyelets for wings and don't have a need for them anymore. They're made by Crew Outfitters with a 16" neck. I'm 6'1" , 170 lbs and they fit nice. Just looking to get them out of my closet…. $15 each would be great. PM me if interested.

Thanks

I put together this video testing Van Heusen Pilot shirts with a Coffee Splatter Test at the end. It is pretty revealing yet admittedly a little boring.

I was ticked when I purchased 4 of these shirts and found their quality to have diminished so significantly. I eventually found some old ones on ebay from a retired Hawaiian pilot that he purchased 10 years ago and never opened.

cut above collar

Hi, I heard one guy say he did not like the collar on the cut above shirts that the foam was irritating. Any other comments on it? I need new shirts and trying to decide between cut above and landerwood. I am concerned about that foam collar being uncomfortable or feeling weird on my neck. Thanks

I personally like it. Keeps my neck from making the shirt collar dirty.

A Cut Above is a heavy duty shirt (heavy material). Don't expect anything lightweight. Bad for the summer, but they do last a long time....

I didn't like the thick feeling. They refunded my money, so you can always try it. Might be worth shipping cost.

Do you guys know if the Landerwood have a thick feeling also or are they more like a normal pilot shirt I am only used to the VanHeusens commander shirt?
