So, let me ask you, if it was a white male, would he still have had this opportunity? Does Delta routinely handout free 737 type ratings to pilots that go work directly for its competitors like Spirit?
And lets not be PC or anything like that, but I hope she realizes that being female and a miniority is the best combination you can have in this industry! That's two checkboxes the hiring committees can sign off on just one applicant. |

As we are on the topic of requirments for the majors... What do they think about not having a 4 year degree? I know the regionals dont really mind anymore as I'm employed by one and know many regional pilots without their bachelors but how do the majors feel about it? After high school I went to A&P school and worked as a mechanic first. Is it really worth it to start working on a 4 year degree with some sort of online program? Or is it possible to make it without it?

Unfortunately, ur grandparents made mistakes and all this EOE crap exists today. Don't hate tht FO because she took an opportunity DAL is forced to give because of law suits they lost. |
Sorry I'm late, just rumaging around for that ten foot pole.....
Office Space is on...rather fitting to the PCL situation. So many good qoutes...."Ask yourself, 'Is this good for the company'?". |
Of my friends who fly, I don't know of any advantage the non-white non-males have had. Matter of fact, one of my friends who is having lots of difficulty finding a job is a minority.
I wouldn't be too bothered though. White males still dominate cockpits, so what's the problem? |

I don't think a white male would have fared as well unfortunately. It's a tough pill to swallow when we can look back only 50 years ago when minorities were marching for equality, to be judged by their character and not by the color of their skin.
Oh, the irony. I thought we had come a long way, but maybe not. |
Maybe I should start the AWAP. Seems fitting.

You can even get credits for your A&P licenses on top of any ratings you have. :) |
Anything that pays as well and you would want to do, IF you weren't a pilot requires a degree, even an advanced degree--get one! You can't be certain you will be picked by a major, you don't know what health or the economy has in mind for you--be prepared.

Stupid question: could a regional FO technically move directly up to a mainline without becoming a regional Captain first? Or is it an "unwritten rule" that you have to make it to regional Captain before getting accepted by a mainline?
Thanks :) |

Im guna help you see how foolish your comment is. What ur saying is, if a black, because you mention the civil rights marches, cant shoot a single eng ILS, hand flown to mins or balls up an abort on his/her checkride, they will still fly ur family around simply because their black?!
I thought we had come a long way, but maybe not. What I'm saying is, reverse discrimination is alive and well in this country. White males dominate airline cockpits, no doubt, but to allow someone in who is obviously less qualified than another simply because they are minority race and/or gender is ridiculous. The factors to getting an interview/hired should only be 1) who you know (sarcasm) 2) qualifications. I wasn't try to be offensive, and if I came off as such, I apologize. :) |

Affirmative Action started with an executive order Kennedy wrote in the 60's. Call your congress for change. We all know that getting an interview is not about what u know, but who u know. When has that changed? We fly airplanes here. If u cant fly them, u have no business being on line no matter ur gender, creeds or color. |
Yeah well if I ever lost my medical or things didn't work out as a pilot I would go right back to being an A&P I love wrenching and I really do miss it now. Being a mechanic at a part121 union shop is a very very laid back job. So in that aspect I'm not really worried about a backup. I'm really wondering how hard it would be to get on with a major without a 4 year degree. If it is a must than chances are I will most likely start up with Thomas Edison since I can get credits for my A&P cert.

5) Why do we have affirmative action? Because of mistakes the previous generation made. I, u, and our peers have nothing to do with that, but we cant undue it today. We have to live with it.

It is just plain old *vanilla* discrimination. There has always been discrimination against every GROUP of some form. It isn't just the 'flavorable' minority of the month. Btw - when does a majority become a minority and start to enjoy the various kinds of protections? USMCFLYR |

This is going to sound worse than I mean it to, but I'm going to say it anyway. I personally know two young men of color also belonging to OBAP from my Comair days that barely had 1,000 hours. They came to Comair from WMU and were only at Comair for a few months then were picked up by Delta. I personally think that's crap. It's practically reverse discrimination in my book. Here we were slaving away trying to fight our way up and these guys basically got a free pass.
Maybe I can sue someone? Will Reverend Jackson or Sharpton come to my aid? (What exactly are they reverends of, anyway???) So like someone else said, if you are affirmative-action eligible, you can pretty much write your own ticket. You're really in the money if you are female and affirmative-action eligible. If you're a white male then pick a number and wait on it to turn up in the raffle. |

I think this thread could have been ended on page 1....
The answer is... yes its possible to get hired to mainline from the rightseat at a regional... but your chances are very very slim, and for those that did it has nothing to do with how much flight time you have. This shortage that all flight schools are trying to shove down young aspiring pilots throats is not going to be what they're telling you. Yes there are big numbers retiring, but the majors are merging and then will be shrinking. There will not be a shortage at the major level... keep in mind you are not just going up against US pilots for these jobs... The US and the US airlines make it very easy to come work here. |

I'm strongly opposed to affirmative action, but as long as it's here you would be an idiot not to take advantage of it if you qualify. This is one of those hate the game, not the player kind of situations.

I was curious about this D*** C*** lady so I googled her, and it looks like she instructed for a few years, then did some part 135 before moving on to a regional (all very typical experience) and then to Spirit before finally making it to Delta. Looks like she got hired in her mid 20s there which isn't common but certainly not unheard of. I myself know a few white males who were hired there when they were 26. Timing may also have been on her side, because she got hired during that short-ish hiring spree about 5 years ago. So what's the big deal? FYI, the scholarship isnt limited to females, and neither is the WAI membership/conferences.
|
Guys who drool and envy only empower her more. For someone who talk big like you say she does, attention is part of it and this is playing right into her plan.

I really hope some people will eventually learn to spell correctly. Proper grammar would be a nice touch also. However, I'm not holding my breath.
