How many people would do it if they weren't paid at all?
Why should regional airlines not pay pilots?
Because they are stepping stones to Majors?
Why should Majors not pay pilots?
Because they are stepping stones to UPS and FedEx?
Why should UPS and FedEx not pay pilots?
Because they are stepping stones to cushy FAA jobs?
If you just think of an airline job as a "stepping stone", how can you say that anything else isn't? Why should any other echelon in this ladder pay you any more? You rationalize it and they take advantage of that...

I like flying airplanes. I would fly for free. I expect ALOT of money for being away from home 18 days a month including weekends and holidays, for eating lousy food most of the time, for listening to the people in the hotel room next to me s-r-w-ng for two hours straight, for dealing with scheduling, for two leg commuting to work and home, for staying in crowded crashpads, for going through security and dealing with the smurfs, for waking up at 4:15 am tomorrow and staying up til 2 am the next night, for studying for PCs...the list goes on. I'll sit in my fancy jet for free. For the rest...I deserve a boatload of money. Anybody who would do that for free is an idiot and doesn't know his own worth let alone anything about this industry. Considering what we get paid, I'll b---- all I want about the lack of pay. We all earn the right to b----- all day and all night about the lousy pay.

We will never be able to convince a "I would do it for nothing" guy how wrong he is. Until he experiences getting extended trip after trip, missing his commute home, spending a grand total of four 30 hour stints at home per month, and doing seven legs with 20 minute turns, the wide-eyed pie-in-the-sky CFI won't get what a grueling life being a regional pilot is.

Not that you have much chance of doing anything else in this industry.
