MAN and BHX aren't really much cheaper. BHX was about $120 in taxes last time I flew out of there in May and MAN was $130ish when I did it in June. If you can book a Ryanair flight to DUB and fly from there. It's only $36 out of Dublin and you can get a Ryanair flight from Stansted, Gatwick or Luton for about £10-20 if you book enough in advance.

The Eurostar to Paris or Brussels can be had for 60-80 USD with enough advance purchase (around 3 weeks).

UK departure taxes are the highest in Europe and the taxes out of LHR are the highest. That is why there are ways open seats out of LHR. People in the know usually non rev INTO lhr then out of somewhere else. Nothing nefarious going on, just governmental taxation without representation (tourist have no vote other than not to travel there)!! LOL. Do an Internet search. It's easy to look up the departure taxes from various European cities and plan accordingly.
