Short staffed? With the new airplanes will we see a hiring boom reminiscent of XJT's 2006?

The boom has already started. Classes are scheduled into March next year for the 145.

Is it possible to go to RAH and get on the 170 right off or is it most common to fly the 145 first and then upgrade?

170, 145, 747-400...they all pay the same in the right seat at RAH.

Short answer is yes, you can get any airplane as a newhire.

You sure about that? I thought you had to have ATP mins to get in on the Embraer 170/5

Yup, I'm sure. You have to have ATP mins for the 170 because of insurance/sim status/excuse of the week, but the FO pay is the same regardless of the airplane you fly, from 135 to 195.

If you don't believe me, take a look right here on APC - FO rates the same.

I think he meant the statement that you can get any airplane as a newhire. My understanding is that if you are hired onto CHQ then you are on the 135/140/145 or CRJ. If you go the Shuttle/Republic side you are on the 170/175/190. Originally they wanted ATP mins for the 170 guys because they needed captains ASAP. I don't know if they still wan't ATP mins to get onto the 170 but as previously stated, it shouldn't matter to you as an FO since they all pay the same.
