What best describes the reason you became an airline pilot (or are becoming an airline pilot)?

The reason I became a pilot is that I'm exceptionally bad at financial decisions.

I just enjoy flying. It's nice not having a true boss, you're desk travels with you, you're not stuck with the same people all the time, for the most part good schedule flexibility and in the long run pay isn't terrible.
|
I didn't want to work for a living.

I wasn't able to get the poll up before you answered in the thread. There is a multiple choice poll now.

I've traded tens of millions of dollars in stock, and I did pretty well, but I had to come here to find out but I'm bad at financial decisions. Thanks for the chuckle. Like many things your post is funny because it's true. |
I thought it would get me laid....no, no it doesn't.
|
Thought the same about being a Naval Aviator.
It did. Sadly, it was my ex wife it attracted! |

I got into it because its what I love doing...and still do despite the current circumstances. I think they will get better eventually as this is a cyclical business. Its definitely not all about money. There are many other things I could do that would make me alot more money but that I have no interest in.
|
I do it now because I like the people I work with. It may at times be hard to believe, but most of us are above average in intelligence. It's a good peer group.
|
I became a pilot for the chicks. 7 years, still single...
|
I have many many reasons.
1) I enjoy seeing the world for free and flying first class everywhere. (last non-rev flight was last Sept and took 32 hours getting back home). 2) Staying in great hotels on somebody else's dime is awesome. (Try a not yet remodeled or under construction La Quinta. It's a hoot). 3) Love the thrill I get from the respect and admiration given to me while in uniform. (Specially from TSA and other airlines' gate agents). 4) Lets not forget the exotic meals we get try. (Who would have thought peanuts and pretzels are a staple food everywhere). And that's just some of those reasons. :) In all honesty, overall I do love my profession. |
I became a pilot because I never wanted to do anything else. Why does a kid want what he wants?
I remain a pilot because, as it turns out, I am totally awesome at it. It would be criminal to go do something else and deprive the public of my talent. |
I drive my cars in the left seat for my entire life, so I'd figure I would get the right arm tan be being a regional FO my entire life.
|
When I was in third grade I sat near the window. I was often caught staring out the window with my mind no where near the classroom. My teacher told me that no one would pay me to sit and stare out a window. From that day forward I wanted to prove her wrong. Guess I showed her.
That's why I became a pilot. |

Let's rephrase the question: I just have to fly... even if it means abandoning your family. I just have to fly... even if it means killing a puppy. I just have to fly... even if it means investing in a lifetime supply of KY. How about now? Still have that urge to fly, "no matter what?" |
Option 6 - TV show or movie depicting flying

Relax Captain Literal, I'm sure a lot of us picked this one simply because we enjoy flying, and because it fits better than the other reasons. I'd rather fly with someone doing it because they enjoy the job than someone who's in it for the money (delusional) or for the rank or wearing the spiffy uniform (vain). It doesn't mean we don't care about the money either (also delusional).
For the record, I'm in this business for 7 of the available 10 options. But I won't do it "no matter what." |
it is the closest to a videogame i could find. i would have just gone the professional videogamer route but sadly i cant afford online play right now to improve my game. hopefully when i make a decent wage i can start honing my skills online and get sponsored to join Major League Gaming. the irony is sad.

Sunrises/Sunsets are a pretty big % of it.
|
How about because it's a non-traditional job and a lot of us would rather cut our wrist rather than spend one day in cubicle hell.
http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image.../Office3_L.jpg Unfortunately this is also why we're so easy to take advantage of. |

I see your point. You must admit though, there are those out there willing to fly just for the sake of flying itself. Those folks are dangerous to those of us combining our passion for flying with the career it can provide.

But really, the F16 was cool and all. The mission was sweet and war was fun. Out of them all, I would say my most fun was flying with you younger guys on the RJ. Let me tell ya, UAL isn't that fun compared to a nice 16 hour overnight in LEX, ALB, CAE, or wherever else with a great crew. |
i chose 'other' because there is no
"i make poor life decisions" option also, the results are not surprising i guess considering the 5hitshow that regional airline pilot labor groups are for the most part... "I just have to fly, no matter what" i guess there's something to be said for their honesty in answering.... |
