This is very straight forward. Yet it seems many people don't understand. For the people who think wages will magically be increased across the board go to your local community college and take a few basic business classes. In the current environment an airline will go out of business before any significant wage increase is implemented.

Wrong. This is the great and successful lie that has allowed wages to stagnate while executive pay soars.

The company will not go out of business. Don't be overly dramatic.

Regional airlines can't give pilots the needed raises. That money doesn't exist, it comes from their major airline partners and the contracts that are negotiated with them. Regional airlines do not set ticket prices.

Regional airline management can ask for a bigger pot of money from their parent partner, but if the pot gets too big, the money will get awarded to someone else's airline who will do it cheaper. If there is no other airline willing to accept the pot of money from the parent airline, then the flying goes away and gets reabsorbed back to the major where it should be anyway.

Regional Airlines are nothing more than a B scale. Wanted by the major airline. Wanted by the major airline pilots. Wanted by regional airline ownership. Perpetuated by regional airline pilots. The less you make, the more everyone else makes. But isn't this the way you really like it? It must be because nobody in 20 years has done anything about it.

I sometimes wonder if regionals are a necessary evil. Would people really give them up if it meant their Delta salary was 20k less every year and topped out at $175/hour? Does it all even out, a few years of suffering for a few decades of better salary/QOL?

But isn't this the question of all questions? The question that must be asked and answered first before all other questions?

Should regional airlines exist?

The regional pilot group can't hope better themselves without first answering this question. And they certainly can't agree on the answer, or any answer for that matter. Probably because nobody represents or leads them.

From Fixing Pilot Pay at Regional Airlines | Airline Pilot Info

Should regional airlines (B scale) continue to exist?

If no, problem is basically solved.

If yes, should one expect he/she can make a career at a regional airline?

If no, then FO pay and Captain pay should be the same, flattened. Only longevity pays higher. You are forced to move up to a major or out. Hopefully there is a flow through program and the better airlines will have this. You want ALPA representing your interests.

If yes, then Captains continue to make more at the expense of FO’s, but all FO’s have a shot at making a livable career at the regional. Hopefully you can get your hands on a bigger pot of money from the major airline. You don’t want ALPA under this situation, you need an organization which truly represents your interests as a regional (B scale) pilot.

Interesting analysis, makes sense.

"A few years" of suffering can turn into few decades of suffering overnight, at any time. This is true even at places like Mesa which are growing at a rapid pace.

Airlines mess up, economies tank, or--what I'm more concerned about--some green Captain who had no business upgrading, along with an FO who took 100+ hours IOE to hit the line (and who has no business flying a jet--at all) puts a plane in the ground.

I hope that doesn't happen to Mesa--but there are new Captains and FOs all over the place who have absolutely no business anywhere near the flight deck--in either seat position.

Yup. Another plane missing from radar this am over Africa, 3 in one week! I'm counting my blessings right now. If you don't think this could happen in the US, you're kidding yourself. I pray it never happens, but some a****e with an RPG could cripple this industry
