Pilot Shortage (2015 Embry Riddle summit)

Airline Industry Leaders Gather at Embry-Riddle to Discuss Pilot Shortage -- DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Jan. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --

This has very little credibility as it is being held at a place that stands to benefit from the perception that there is a pilot shortage and attended by companies that created the shortage in the first place by driving wages down for decades.

I'll save them two days....pay more at the regional level and there is no longer a shortage.

+1

Idiots.

Eliminate the "Regional Level" altogether. It's nothing more than a "B" Scale, really a "C" scale.

Make the career desirable and there will be no shortage.

"Regionals" shouldn't be like minor league baseball. It's real flying in real airplanes with real passengers, accounting for about 50% of all departures.

It's nothing more and nothing less than a "B/C" scale and should be absorbed back into the real airlines.

That's not likely to happen, but it's what should happen.

Pilot Supply Summit discussions will include new FAA flight training standards, manufacturing demands and forecasts, regional and legacy airline pilot attrition and hiring demands. Potential solutions to the crisis will also be proposed.

This will be interesting. Can't wait to hear the "potential solutions".

I have one. Pay them and they will come.

A critical component missing from these pilot shortage conferences is.....
testimony from actual regional pilots!!!! The best we get is (was) Lee Moak.

If anyone has watched on YouTube the testimony given before congress, we get to be regaled with stories from Bryan Bedford about how being a regional pilot is the best job on Earth and how low pay doesn't really matter.

The bottom line is that regional pilot voices being disregarded is why we need to take the initiative speak out. Write congress, AOPA, Flying magazine, etc. Show up to these meetings to get the microphone to ask the tough questions and give your testimony.

I was thinking the same thing. What if we showed up to offer some "real world" insight? Would they let us in?

flyguy19348 01-13-2015 06:25 AM

So lets say they raised pay today, how long till those young aviators are online? Can the industry make it to that point?

We all know that they do NOT want to pay more so that's why you see the flow through system, because it actually costs nothing to implement, but will it grow? To include non wholly owned? Will it transition, as previous poster said' minor league? Meaning no interview, you just have a number from the day you start in your RJ.

How high must pay go to allow financing? Currently there are very few banks that will loan for flight school as there is very high failure for repayment, and too long before payments can begin. How should they fix that problem?

I think the first step would be for every regional to drop ALPA and start their own regional union. ALPA does nothing for regionals except paint pretty pictures until it's contract time and then they tell you "bend over, it won't hurt for long, you'll be a real pilot soon"

I know it's not an easy task but...

I agree with this. Also, STOP working for airlines without a union.
