I use the telex 5x5 with custom molded ear pieces and the regional package from here The Regional Jet Package from PilotStuff.com
After a few summers sweating from the david clamps I needed this. This is what my first IOE check airman was wearing and he swore by it. Now I'll do the same. It's not ANR but the custom molds help with passive noise reduction. It is a little louder than david clarks in the aircraft with the old wiper baldes but the comfort is worth it. Oh and it takes a bit to get the gain on the mike correct. Airfix |
Light speed Zulus are great. Their customer service is great as well. You can plug into your phone, iPad or computer and have great sound as you commute. Plus the Bluetooth is helpful for calling maintainance, dispatch, scheduling, or a FSS.

Yeah. Today's RJ passengers have forgotten what it was like to ride on, (or have never ridden on) the commuter aircraft of yester-year: B-1900, Jetscream, Shorts, Metroliner, Beech 99 or EMB-100, ("The Bandit"). They're a spoiled bunch.
The "Bandit" was the EMB-110. |

Looking at the UFlyMike website, it looks like they are releasing the next generation of the UFlyMike for the QC-25 on March 11th.
I've been eagerly awaiting this to finally replace my trusty DavidClarks. |

Yeah.....No thanks......I did mention the A20s are almost 2X the cost? $1,000 for a headset? Your out of your mind..... |
The old DC's, the green monsters, work just fine on this salary!

Why on earth would I do that? Almost 2X the cost, 2X the bulk/weight, and no ability to use the headset independent of the microphone?

Excellent headsets on the used market available for less then what you will pay for a NC converted headset/mic.
My biggest peave is the "soft talkers", yep their wearing a UFly. All those super quiet RJ transmissions, Uflys with the mic hanging down. |
Seen many different models being used.. I prefer the A20 for comfort, noise cancelation and clarity. Albeit this was previously used for flying piston powered aircraft, it transitioned perfectly to a jet.
I also, hear great things about the clairty aloft pro plus.. |
I believe TSO requirements are airline specific. The Bose/uflymike setup is especially nice for commuters and long sits in the crew room.

Another vote for the Bose A20. They are mid-range, IMO, as far as comfort is concerned but are the best I've worn when it comes to noise cancelling/sound deadening qualities. I have used the QC-15 setup but was never happy with the lack of flexibility and one sided-ness of the mic setup. Also, the noise cancelling is far superior on the A20. I have also used several DC's, the Telex 750 and 850 and have test worn some Sennheisers.
I flown with a lot of older captains who definitely have hearing issue - too many years of jets, props and inadequate hearing protection. A head set is one area that I would not recommend cutting corners on. And regarding expense. If you want sticker shock, price out a high-quality set of hearing aids. Watched that first hand with a couple of older family members. |
